I, VIM t>| ilBf.r LAWVN FERTUZER by Officer Jim Fitzgerald Public Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 Update !"v.a. news! As much as I hate to admit it, summer is fast drawing to a close, and sooner than we think, fall is going to be here, and all of you lucky people out there who have boats are going to be taking them out of their respective mooring slots and back to where you keep them over the winter. This means that you are going to be getting out the trailer again and hooking it up to th^ back of the car and driving out to the boat dock, and some of you aren't going to make it past the next block before the trailer falls off the hitch, or the hitch falls off the car. v; Now, before you have to use it, get out there and check the little devil out. Make sure that all the"wiring is in good order, and that there are no bare spots or loose connections. Check out all of the lighting and bulbs for burned out ones, or any rust or corrosion that may ground the whole mess. Check the ball holder for any cracks, or loose pieces, and make stire that the safety chains are both there and that the hooks are also still there and not bent out of shape. Next, go over to the hitch and check for any loose bolts or cracked welds where the hitch is attached to the vehicle. There are few surprises equal to hitching the trailer to the back of the car, driving off down the road, and watching as the boat and trailer pass you up after they become unhooked from the car. To be extra safe, go over all the bolts with a wrench and snug them all down extra light. If there are any cracks in the welding, go to a shop that does welding and have it fixed first. Boy, I hate to type this next sentence, but the same thing goes for all of you who have a snowmobile trailer too. After you put the boat back on the trailer, pull the drain plug to get out the excess water, which is nothing more than unnecessary weight. Then, tie the boat down to the -trailer securely because the rocking back and forth of a loose boat on a trailer can cause the whole thing to tip over in the middle of the road. If you have an outboard, tip the engine up and block it there, because it is possible when you go over a bump in the road for the bottom of the engine to hit (he road, causing some damage lo the lower unit. Afer you have pulled the boat out of the water, check the tires for fullness, or a lack of air. It is easier to pull a trailer if the tires are fully inflated to the limit marked on the tires. Also, plan on spending a little more lime on the trip back home when the boat is on the trailer, so that you can drive the distance slower than you nor mally would. Remember that you have an extra couple of thousand pounds attached to the rear of the car that is going to take a little longer for the car to stop. Also, remember to make your turns at the corner a little wider because you are considerably longer than you were. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few inconsiderate people out there who do not choose to obey, or are just Unaware of what a handicap parking sign is, or means. As well as quite a few Of you, I have seen many vehicles that do not belong to a handicapped person, parked in the slots nearest the stores where they don't belong. These people should be aware that the city and the police are working with the owners of the property to get an ordinance to allow us to ticket those people who choose to disregard those signs. Hopefully, this will come very soon, but these things take some time to make sure that everything is done properly and legally. See you next week. A program on "Breast Cancer Update" for McHenry county physicians has been prepared by the medical staff of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. Dr. Timothy E. Tully, hospital radiologist, and Dr. Edward J. Chereck, hospital staff member with a deep concern , in the physical and emotional treatment of this form of cancer, have obtained two outstanding specialists to head the discussion at the thirteenth annual clinical symposium, scheduled at the hospital in Woodstock Wed nesday afternoon and evening, Sept. 19. - A dinner will be served in conjunction with the sym posium so/ reservations are needed, Dr. Tully said. McHenry county physicians should call the hospital and contact the medical staff secretary coordinator for reservations. Dr. Chereck will serve as program moderator. In addition to the two out standing University of Wisconsin Medical center specialists, Mrs. Lynn Rew, M.S., educative health coun selor for Kishwaukee Valley Medical group, will discuss the emotional and social impact of breast problems in women. Opening the program will be Dr. Guillermo Ramirez, professor of human oncology at Madison, Wis. After Mrs.i Rew's presentation, Dr. Raul H. Matallana, associate professor of radiology, will discuss mammographic evaluation of the breast. Discussion follows each presentation, the program concluding withv a report on current treatment of breast carcinoma by Dr. Ramirez. The symposium is one in a continuing series of medical staff efforts to keep physicians up-to-date on the more timely problems confronting the medical profession. All three hospitals, in McHenry county cooperate -on the series p r o g r a m s p r e s e n t e d throughout the year. Dr. ftlatallana, native of Peru, is a pioneer in xeromamography and has been a leader in developing new types of xerography. A research scientist, he has published more than three dozen articles and books, talked at two dozen national and international conferences and has been a visiting teaching professor at universities and medical schools in both South American countries and the United States .v Dr. Ramirez has published 68 paper son oncology and tumors. He has traveled extensively in South America speaking on aspects of breast cancer. He is consultant to the Veterans Administration hospital at Madison, Wis., and is a member of the National Cancer Institute for Latin America. Mrs. Rew's part in the program will be to emphasize the importance of counseling to recognize the emotional and social impact of breast cancer on women. Dr. Chereck said in his experience a woman's viewpoint is valuable in helping breast cancer patients; he believes her presentation can call attention to the value of physicians recognizing other- than-physical consequences of breast cancer. "Most members of the medical profession are men," he concluded. PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER It, IS7S dishonorable discharges ;are eligible for all death benefits. Keeping such information land documents in one place is also, helpful in filing for Social Security benefits. When the VA is notified of a veteran's death, if ther^ is government insurance in force the VA notifies the beneficiary automatically. All other benefits must be applied for. Information about r a veteran's service makes it easier on those who must apply for benefits. Both young and old will provide this assistance by storing pertinent „ service in formation in one place. Any Veterans Administration office, veteran's service organization or county service officer will provide information and help on death benefit^. Outdoor Setting The "grate" outdoors is also known as a site for barbecue lovers.. Veterans of all ages should have an "information packet for survivors" filed with their will, the Veterans Ad ministration suggests. In case of accident, severe illness or death this in formation could speed help to the veteran or his survivors. There are many benefits available to veterans which may be provided quickly if proper information is available. In case of accident or illness relatives would need such information should the veteran require VA hospitalization. In case of death benefits include a burial and plot allowance of $450; a flag for the service, and a headstone for the grave. * Information which a veteran should have compiled on one card include: Full name-as used in service; Service serial number; Social Security number; VA Claim number, if any; Branch of service and dates of service. A veteran's discharge should be kept together with a will, insurance policies, marriage certificate and other important documents.
