"We are looking forward to a good year in cross country," Coach Hans Rokus said. Rokus is the athletic director and cross country coach at Marian Central Catholic high school. Rokus said that the Hurricanes are coming off a fourth place in statewide Class A competition last year. The year before, he said, we took ninth place. The Hurricanes do not have the depth that they had last year, Rokus said. , "We lost the best runner in the history of the school, Darryl May, from Johnsburg, to a cross country scholarship and a couple of seniors who ran last year did not come out this year," Rokus said. Rokus said he was "expecting big things" from his top three runners: Paul Sandall, Spring Grove; Mike Eisele, McHenry and Brad Gregory, Woodstock. Sandall placed 13th in state competition last year as a sophomore and both Eisele and Gregory placed in the Top 40. One veteran senior, who Rokus is counting on, is Bob Weltzien from Crystal Lake. Around this nucleus, the Hurricanes are counting on Paul Herkes, McHenry; Gary- Dernelle, Ringwood and three Woodstock runners: Marty McCormick, Bob Morris and Andy Mass.
