Thunderstorms (cumulo nimbus clouds) begin with cumulous formation and when the rising air currents form clouds as high as 25,000 feet, it is a thunderstorm cloud. When precipitation begins, from air turned into clouds by cooling as it rose, the updrafts of the normal cumulonimbus are now mixed with down- drafts caused by falling cool rain or ice crystals. The final stage comes when the updrafts cease alto gether ' and down drafts pre dominate. Rain decreases and turbulance and lightning also decrease in this final stage.
