SERVICE NEWS A 1978 graduate of McHenry high school, he joined the Marine Corps in March, 1978. PAGE S • PLAIWPEALEK • FR1DAV, 8EPTEMBEB 21, lt7t (by Father William O. Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church, Efrifccopal, Kenilworth a for mer McHenry resident now living in Florida). There are at least four Woodstocks in the United States and two of these are county seats; Woodstock, 111., has a famous old courthouse, but has built a new one. Woodstock, Va., founded in 1752 has a famous old courthouse which they still use. There are lovely old homes in each Woodstock. The ones here in Virginia are older, some going back to colonial times. The Massanuttan Military academy is a good sized and famous institution of Woodstock, Va., the county seat of Shenandoah county. We have often gone to the county fair in Woodstock, 111. This week we went to the one in Woodstock, Va. The Illinois town is losing its old fashioned appeal to new housing ' developments and growth. The Woodstock here also is getting new people, but at nowhere near the rate in Illinois. I should say prices were lower here by and large. I saw a haircut advertised for $1.50, though most here in Happy Valley get more than that. Prices are lower than in Illinois, save for gasoline. We went to the county fair here this week. It cost us 50 cents to park in a muddy field and $1.75 each to enter the fairgrounds. The first place we went to at the fair was the stock barn where they were judging about 20 heifers and steers entered by 4-H clubbers. We were there quite a while, for it' was interesting to see the young people handling their entries while the judge went around. After a long time the judge awarded the prizes and made a little speech thus: "These are fine young cattle and I congratulate you all on your entries. You will wonder why I have awarded the prizes as I have. Let me tell you something as to why. This heifer is walking on her back legs more than the frbiit ones (indeed you could see that of all the entries, this was the only one that showed this trait). This one is washboardy in the ribs. This one is smooth (a steer). It is better for market. The wash boardy one goes back to the feeding lot." He said a lot more and gave first prize to a fine looking black Angus steer entered by a young woman (sixteen?) who was very happy and proud. In. the main cattle show the bulls were immense, heavy, massive. The cows chewed their cuds and looked content. If they were good milk producers their future was assured till production fell off. Stock shows are fun for me - due I suppose, to the fact that in Chicago I often went to the International Live Stock show. For lunch we stopped at one of the many booths run by local clubs or church groups. We each had a big hot dog dressed with fresh, fried onions-- mighty good, too. They were 50 cents and far better and larger than the ones that cost you 75 cents at the ball games in St. Petersburg. Milk was 45 cents a pint ; it is 45 cents a half-pint in an awful lot of places. I judge that in the baking awards, prizes went to size, texture and color for the ones that had these qualifications hung with ribbons. There were jams, jellies, cookies, breads and cakes. Mrs. Hanner looked over the dressmaking awards with a practiced eye. f hose of you who know her well know that she is good with a needle, sewing machine and color. Her reaction to the prizes given in dressmaking and sewing were: 'fine as to workmanship but poor as to choice of materials'. She thought maybe finer materials were not available (maybe they were not ap- preciated-who knows?) There is no way of figuring tastes, is there? Then there were poultry barns, a noisy place, with as large a selection of highly bred fowl as I have seen. The raising of chickens, turkeys and apples is big business in this part of Virginia. The camp Where we are living serves apple butter at every meal. They make it up in the parking lot-three days in the fall, and make, so they tell me, near 175 gallons which takes about 75 bushels of apples (but I cannot get a sure judgement on that: "I figger near 75 bushels" they say!) There were individual flowers shown (for' perfection of bloom) and arrangements. I saw one arrangement with a note, "You have used artificial grapes and that disqualifies you. Arrangements must be of natural material." Every night there is a special event: a pony show with old style fiddlin' and banjos thrown in, there is a Demolition Derby (with old cars) and a tractor pull. One night they had "A tribute to Elvis" ; another time Tommy Cash was to sing. Then to crown the whole thing, on the last night, they forget all about cows and bulls, pullets and cocks, and baking and sewing, and bend their efforts to girl pickin' and out of that contest comes Miss Shenandoah county, and that I guess is what county fairs are all about. Heart's Output If an average adult heart continuously pumped fresh blood, it could in 24 hours fill a 2,600 gallon tank.
