The . present membership is now ap proximately 50 members. Objectives of the club are to further women ifi business, work toward supportive legislation to benefit women, contribute toward members" community interests, provide scholarships to further education of youth and working women, ratification of ERA, help members be better in formed about the business world, and work toward in creased membership. The BPW gave two scholarships this past year. One went to Patty Congdon, who used the award to further her business career studies, and one to Mark Patterson, who entered the architectural field. The club feels scholarships to be very important and try to raise funds during the year to increase support for the youth ahd women in the area to help them further their education. Fund raisers include bake sales, book reviews, and in the immediate future is a card party Nov. 13 at St. Patrick's church hall. Each year mittens are donated to the Head Start program, and Christmas gifts to the elderly. Members also cooperate with the Salvation Arii^y Donut day project, collecting on the streets for this worthy cause. •^Programs sponsored by the club include an action courseln political honestv, "I quit smoking clinic", child abuse program, the Open Primary petition drive, and the Legislative cut-back drive. The - club sent. two representatives to the national convention in Boston, Mass. The club has received various state and national awards. Each year a woman is selected from McHenry to receive the "Woman of the Year" award. This award is given to a well deserving business women who has been nominated by any McHenry citizen. She is chosen for her business accomplishments and contributions to the public welfare of the community. Nominations this year will be received until Oct. 13 and the award will be given at the Oct. 22 dinner meeting at Raymond's restaurant in Johnsburg. Fun projects for the club include a "Day at the Races", a dinner and play, and entering a float in the Marine day parade of McHenry. The BPW holds a meeting every third Monday of the month. Each committee is responsible for securing a different restaurant and speaker for the monthly meeting. CHURCH SERIES THEME "Challenging Christianity with Christ" will be the theme of a 3-week series starting at 9:30 and 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Unity church of Crystal Lake, located at the in tersection of Rt. 31 and US 14. The 9:30 a.m. service will be an informal review of the same material presented in the 11 o'clock service but with the opportunity for questions and discussion. As a certainty, the effort could do no harm. r 4-H NEWS 1 COUNTY FEDERATION At the first meeting of the 1979 McHenry County 4-H Federation, a planning com mitted was named to schedule the speakers and events for the coming year. A Halloween party committee was formed to plan the October party, and also a committee to tear down the 4-H float. It was decided to drop the square dance committee from the list of annual county committees.
