By Larry Harris >» Farm Bureau Manager It's that time of year again -- the fall. Living in a rural community it means you'll soon be seeing.tractors with wagons, combines and grain trucks moving along our roads as they harvest crops and bring them to market. Many times these vehicles will be moving slowly. Motorists should try to remember, while they move slowly behind these vehicles, that top speed for most tractors and combines is about 8 - 20 mph and they are hard to manipulate on rough shoulders. Farmers must realize that it is important for safety to let traffic flow, and, should pull over where iuis safe. These mutual considerations will make this time of year more pleasant for both motorists and farmers. Here are a few interesting facts on the volume of grain raised in McHenry county. Last year our totals were ap proximately: corn, 14,420,000 bushels (403,760 tons); soybeans; 1,184,000 bushels (35,520 tons); wheat and oats (each); 420,000 bushels (12,600 tons). Most corn raised in our county is sold to local grain elevators or directly to Chicago grain companies. It is then processed and finally shipped either overseas or to manufacturers in this country. The type of corn raised in this county is used for such things as animal feeds, starches, and corn sweeteners. Also: October is Pork month! Th$ weather is still too beautiful to put away your BBQ grills-and what can taste or smell better ^han thick juicy grilled pork cnops or ribs. Did you know that on weight basis, a 3'£ oz. serving of cooked pork provides 28 grams of protein, 13 grams of fat and only 240 calories. Considering these nutrients plus other nutrients in pork such as iron and B vitamins, this represents a significant factor both in planning menus and in relation to the calories. Pork is a major dietary source of thiamin (three times as much as any other food source) and other B vitamins, essential to fdod utilization, appetite, healthy nerves, skin and oral health. , * s* Beginning early in lifd *and continuing throughout a healthy active life span, pork is synonymous with good eating and better nutrition. <*The variety is unlimited and if its into any meal of the day in cluding snack time. W«feht watchers, those recovering from illness or surgery as^vell as the healthy ones, w{ll enjoy a variety of good eating and }ive high on the nutritive value of pork. Christian Education Facilities Expanded Faith Presbyterian church has begun using the mobile classroom, purchased last fall from McHenry Community high school. It has been remodeled so that three classrooms are available, each capable of housing 20 students. The „ purchase of the classroom has been necessary because of the rapid growth in Anxious to make the right arrangements for your wedding? The classroom may also- be used in a new Christian Education program now being planned. The program would include youngsters from ages 8 to 18 in a variety of activities ranging from involvement in a guitar choir to crafts and group projects. The classroom was brought from East campus by con struction company workers who then installed it on Con crete pillars and provided insulation. The men of the church, under the direction of Don Henderlong of Lil^moore, construction partitions within the 1,200-square-foot area, It was painted, inside and out, and will be landscaped as well.
