Card Field Goal Defeats Warriors 15-12 In Homecoming Game Friday *9 3" on 3Ci( • , By Dick Rabbitt jri Frank Scarpelli's 22 yd. field ^sfoal with 7:26 remaining in the thirji period enabled the Dundee Cardunals to defeat the Warriors 15 to 12 last Friday night. v> Once again the homecoming vJinx prevailed as the Warriors vcould not come up with the big play in the second half to win _ Jhe game. The Warriors gave it all they had, but it just wasn't endugh. As Coach Joe Schlender said after the game," They, the Cards, came back after an awful beating last week to beat us." The coach also went on to add, "we just got beat, we have no alibi!'. I will add that there '" Were a couple of calls in the end ' zone that had the fans buzzing, ' but they were judgement calls, and that takes the official off I 'the hook. The Warriors kicked off to "the Cards 35. With 2 complete passes from DeMein to Morin brought the ball to the Warrior 31. Ed Hughes recovered a fumble at the line of scrim mage and the Warriors took over. The Warriors then began a 69 yd. -13 plays march to the Cardunal goal. Rob Kalck • carried it over from the 3 with 2:45 remaining in the opening ' period. Two Tim Sabatka passes to Tim Klapperich kept " the drive going just when it seemed the Warriors were "going to bog down. The first period ended with the Warriors out in front 6 to 0. Pass Play/. Pays Early in the second period £fter both teams held each other on downs, the Warriors recovered a fumble on the Card •<37. Seconds later the Cards ' intercepted a Sabatka pass on ' their own 46. On the next play DeMein hit Morin over the |ddle, and Jthe fine end of the rds raced 54 yds. to tie the :ore. The PAT failed and it /as 6 to 6 at 9:44 of the period. After an exchange of punts, the Warriors recovered another Dundee fumble on the 20. Three plays later Rob Kalck went over from the 1 and the Warriors led 12 to 6 with 3:28 remaining in the half. Hie PAT failed. The Cards took the kickoff on their own 32 and began a march that ended with Morin wrestling the ball away from the Warrior defender in the end zone with just seconds remaining in the half. The PAT failed and the score was 12 to 12 at the intermission. Anderson brought the second half kickoff back to the Warrior 42 for good Held position. But the Warriors couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt. The Warrior defense held, and forced a Dundee punt that rolled deep in Warrior territory. A pass interception by Morin gave the Cubs the ball on the Warrior 24. After a first down inside the 10, the Warrior defense dug in and held, but then Scarpelli's field goal with 7:26 remaining in the period gave the Cards a 15 to 12 lead. That Warrior Defense The Cards later began a 41 ydj march that brought them to the 1 yd. line where again the Warrior defense held and the Warriors took over. Late in the game each team exchanged interceptions. The Warriors held the Cards at midfield, and with one minute remaining took over. Four incomplete passes gave the Cards the ball, and they ran out the clock to win 15 to 12. It was a disappointed group of Warriors and coaches that walked off the field Friday night. Once again a homecoming victory was to be denied. I'm beginning to believe that the Warriors are snakebitten at homecoming time. It has to be seven or eight years since the Warriors won a homecoming game. However, they ran better Friday night than in any other game this season. They outgained the Cards on the ground 124 to 70. As Coach Schlender said, "Dundee executed well, but we did some fine things also." Schlender added, "We ran the ball better tonight than we have all season, and it is going to make us a better team." The genial coach has a positive attitude, and I hope it rubs off on his players. As I left the locker room he called, "We will be ready for Jacobs next Saturday". You can bet on that statement. The fates must dictate that McHenry High isn't supposed to win a Homecoming football game. This time our Warriors went down to defeat by a score of 15- 12 to Dundee. Many things went into the hopper to bring about the loss. Injury to Jim Frantz early in the game took away one of quarterback Tim Sabatka's favorite targets in the pass attack. The Warriors have sometimes held the edge in penalties assessed. Not this time. Several things figured in the loss, not the least of which was a determined, alert Dundee team. Must give the victors credit. They passed and caught. c4 One observer thought the Warriors played a spirited first half, then went a bit flat in the last half. I dunno. Haven't seen the statistics. Nobody has run up a big score on the Warrior defense. Now, if our offensive team can put more points on the board, everything will be hunky-dory. There is great anticipation about the new press box to be constructed next year. Some of the "architects" in the coop want to have a special cubicle for Dick Rabbitt's pipe and my cigar. OVERHEARD: When a fellow went down town wearing one brown shoe and one black one, a friend called it to his attention. The wearer looked down at his feet, then remarked, "I have another pair just like these at home" "Come quick, grandpa", said our granddaughter, Aleen, as she ran in from the back forty. TRAVELERS - Bob, and ' Rosemary Blake came home from Ireland and Ray and Mae took off for LasVegas. McHenry ambassadors get around. It's hard to believe how thrilled Bob is over his visit to that peaceful Little Isle So Green. (He stayed away from the troubled spots). The beautiful countryside and the warmth of the people took Bob's fancy. Another couple of weeks on the Auld Sod and he would have come home with a brogue. It was a real thrill to see a picture and writeup of Sue Hutchinson, daughter of Bill and Jo Ann, in the Chicago Tribune "High School Athletes of The Week" section last week. Tennis is her game -- * And Super-Sue is her name. Our good friend, Fred Bienapfl, phoned to ask about our request to establish the name of McHenry High's living grad from the earliest year. His wife, Agnes (the former Agnes Tesch) graduated in 1913. There were nine graduates that year and Neill Doherty was the only boy. To help my search, Alvina dug out her year book which lists all the graduates from 1892 through 1923. My mothen, was in the first group. In fact there were three Walsh families listed, cousin Louise's father, Tom Walsh, and Irene Adams Reiger's mother, Johanna Frisby Walsh -Listed as Mrs. John Walsh in the year book. Whoops! Maud Granger is listed in thfc class of 1909. Her sister, Fanny Granger Thompson (Mrs. Robert), is in the 1910 group. Anybody else have anything to offer? Along came the one and only Tom Murphy to our table in the back room, better known as "Bimbo's Waterfront Lounge", to offer a few little gems such as: . "You can't soar with the THREE ON THREE-Equal men from both the Warriors and Cardunals go after a Sabatka pass in this second quarter play. All hands came up empty as the ball found its way to the ground. Sabatka hit on 6 of 19 for 17 yards in the McHenry loss to Dundee. - STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD eagles in the morning if you hoot with the owls all night." Waiting nervously in the hospital while his wife, Nora, was undergoing a cartilage removal from her knee, someone inquired as to the nature of the surgery. Said Tom, "She has to have a cartridge removed from her knee." Soph Skyhawk Eleven Beats Harvard 23-6 The Johnsburg sophomore football squad defeated the Harvard Hornets 23-6 in a conference contest Friday night at the Harvard field. Johnsburg quarterback Dan Williams hit Russ Beck on a 25- yard pass in the second quarter for the first Skyhawk touch down. Ken Free carried the ball across the goal for a successful 2-point conversion. Tom Popovich scored the second Skyhawk touchdown on a 3-yard carry in the third quarter. Free again scored on the conversion. Williams carried the ball for a 25-yard touchdown run at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and an extra point kick by Rob Schmidt was good. The Hornets scored touchdown to make the score 23-6. one final Athlete's \ Away Eureka college has a new brother duo in this year's lineup for the Homecoming game. Brian Nuss, a senior, ran for an 8 yard touchdown, which was quickly followed by a 15 yard end zone catch by Marty Nuss, in his first year at Eureka. 0 The performance of these two brothers helped give Eureka's new coach his first victory of the season. The final, scores Eureka 34 - Principia 8. Field Hockey Team Splits Two Matches In two close matches last week the Warrior field hockey team split a pair. They lost to Woodstock 1 to 0 in a real thriller, as the Streaks scored midway in the second half. On Thursday scoring in each half the Warriors defeated Belvidere 2 to 0. Chris Connell and Sue Haddick each scored a goal for the Warriors. Boland Sophs Down Dundee Cards 24-8 Save Fuel This Winter! Coach Dan * Boland's McHenry High sophomore football team won their first game of the season by defeating Dundee Friday night by the score of 24 to 8. Denny DeJa opened the Warrior scoring with a 4 yd. run in the opening period and the two point conversion was good for an 8 to 0 lead. Later in the half DeJa' raced 36 yds. for another score, and Scott Sch- mitt was on the receiving end of a DeJa pass good for the TAT and the Warriors led 16 to 0. The third and final score came on a Jay Caron pass to Lynk good for 19 yds. DeJa ran in for the PAT for the final Warrior points. *7ocA XL Ifou* WindouAA, Jboote, Po*clt & &*€€f+UtCUf!
