STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Johnsburg Skyhawks Lose To Harvard Hornets 20-6 By Randy Swikle ^ For the Johnsburg Skyhawks it was a case of the wrong i- mistakes at the wrong times as , the Harvard Hornets delivered 20-6 defeat to the second-year ? school Friday night. ^Costly penalties and mistakes at critical times in the I-bidl game put Johnsburg on the I deficit end. ^Harvard's first score with f#;08 remaining in the second quarter was set up after a ^Johnsburg recovery of a Harvard fumble was ruled void because of a personal foul. The - 15-yard penalty brought the ball well within Johnsburg territory, and the Hornets scored on a 4-yard run. The extra point attempt was no -good. Harvard's second score with £:24 remaining in the second quarter was set up by another 15-yard penalty-this time for • face mask violation. It was third down and seven yards to go as the Skyhawks held the Harvard team to no gain. But the 15-yard penalty gave the Hornets a first down and set up an 8-yard run for the touch down. The extra point kick was good. The Hornets scored their last touchdown in the fourth quarter Jwt a 2-yard carry. The TD was f get up by a 30-yard rim when it was third down with eight to go for the Hornets. Johnsburg Coach Mike Heimerdinger suspected the Harvard team might run a reverse and shouted the warning to his players. Either the players didn't hear or didn't heed the warning, however, because the Harvard squad did run the reverse for a big gain of 30 yards to the Johnsburg 2-yard line: The extra point following the 2-yard touchdown run was good. Johnsburg also made some costly mistakes on offense. In' the second quarter the Skyhawks had a good drive going, but they lost the ball on a fumble. In the third quarter they started out with another fine drive-moving the ball from the Johnsburg 25 yard line to the Harvard 30 yard line. It was second down and six to go, and the Skyhakws were hit with a 5-yard penalty for illegal procedure. Two plays later, the Johnsburgers fell two yards short of a first down. The Skyhawks scored their single touchdown with :15 remaining in the game as senior Brian Roberts carried the ball over on a 3-yard run. That touchdown was set up by a 8-yard pass from Skyhawk quarterback Scott Valentin to Jim Boelens. The attempt for a two point conversion failed. During the contest Johnsburg gained 125 yards rushing and 90 yards passing. The Skyhawks were 8 for 16 in the passing department. Harvard made 233 yards rushing and 66 yards passing. The Hornets were 7 for 16 in passing. Skyhawk senior Rick Szumlas ran 17 times for 67 yards. Brian Roberts carried the ball 12 times for 60 yards. Johnsburg coach Mike Heimerdinger expressed some optimism that his team may have some brighter days ahead. . "I watched the films Sunday night," he said, "and even though we made a lot of mistakes, we were still in the ball game." The coach said that senior Dana Andreas, who suffered a recurring injury in Friday's game, may be out for the rest of the season. But Bill Hovseth, who has been sidelined for several weeks, may be able to play in next Saturday's contest. The Skyhawks host Marengo Saturday afternoon. The Marengo team is 0-5 for the season, and both the Indians and the Skyhawks will be searching for their first win at the 2 p.m. kickoff time. OCTOBER 10,It7t Save The Duck Environment Researchers Frank C. Bellrose, Fred L. Paveglio, Jr., and Donald W. Steffeck said last week the incidence of duck hunting along the Illinois river is decreasing. In "Waterfowl Populations and the Changing Environment of the Illinois River Valley," they warn that stringent soil erosion methods to control water turbidity and programs to grow more duck food plants must be im plemented to encourage ducks to stay near the river. To im prove the deteriorating river environment the authors recommend minimum tillage of row crops; restricting erodible slopes to hay, pasture or small grain crops; and maintaining forest cover along stream banks.
