About 100 property owners and others interested in Fox river south of the dam were present, which was called to make a start toward securing a more uniform water level in the river south of the dam. Thomas A. Bolger called the meeting to order and was named tem­ porary chairman and Otto T5edlow was named temporary secretary. # The large summer home of Ernest Oberg of Chicago, located in the John A. Miller subdivision, north of McHenry near the Johnsburg bridge, burned to the ground. The origin 61 the fire is unknown. Dr. E.O. Sullivan, of Win- netka recently purchased "Bally O'Graig", the Theodore Weideman cottage south of McHenry, improved property with 100 feet of river frontage. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 26, 1939) An attempt to break out of the McHenry county jail was foiled when Sheriff Lester Edinger discovered a hole in the ceiling of the second floor of the jail which is claimed to have been cut by three youngsters housed on the second floor. The three who are alleged to have cut the hole include a 14-year-old St. Charles parolee who is charged with the murder of Lester Groth, Riley township farmer. Gus Freund's 1938 LaFayette was stolen. He had it parked in front of Billy Green's house on Court street and as yet the car has not been located. YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of October 21, 1954) In observance of National Newspaper week, which oc­ curred earlier this month, the McHenry Township Kiwanis. club honored women in the newspaper field and other related media at LaGreca's Lakeside Inn at Wonder Lake. Represented in addition to the McHenry Plaindealer were Mary Yates of the Elgin Courier News, Van Sells of Station WKRS, Esther Blodgett of Harvard radio station, Thelma Wichie, her assistant, and Stephanie Waynne of the Community News. The Ballot Battalion cam- vaign in McHenry township is again being sparked by the local Kiwanis club, working in conjunction with other civic and service clubs. Joseph X. Waynne is chairman of the committee. Trophies were awarded last week as a climax of the tennis tournament for boys and girls 12-15 years of age. The tour­ nament was the final activity of the tennis program conducted during the summer by James Doran. Mark Vycital was proclaimed the McHenry boys' 'champion, with Dale Johnston as runner-up. Patsy Mc- Cracken was acclaimed the McHenry girls' champion, with Zelinda Bennett as the runner- up. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 24. 1969) McHenry's City Council voted to auzyorize M.B. Bir- chfield and Associates, financial consultants, to ad­ vertise for the sale of $675,000 general obligation sewer bonds, sealed bids to be received on Nov. 3, 1969. The sale of sewer bonds was approved by the voters in a referendum last December. However high in­ terest rates and the uncertainty of the market dictated a delay in the sale. The referendum ballot called for interest rate not to exceed 6 percent. In a news conference Sheriff John Carroll said he was disturbed over what he termed a "ridiculous rumor" being circulated about a "so-called monster legend of Bull Valley which has no foundation". He said he is taking precautions against any possible vandalism and arrests will be made if vandalism or trespassing is reported. The subject of Lake County press coverage given to what was described as widespread use of drugs by M.C.H.S. students, was the main discussion of the school board meeting. President Althoff called the Waukegan News Sun story "damaging, unwarranted and malicious." Men are getting a break in the new 4-piece suit. Thompson has signed into law a bill sponsored by Sen. Jack Schaffer, that will force the state to justify, in advance, any action that forces the owner of a dam to breach or otherwise destroy a dam. Sen. Schaffer said he in­ troduced the bill at the request of homeowners associations and property owner groups in McHenry and Kane counties who feel they have been harrassed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). "The new law will keep IDOT from coming into our area and ordering the destruction or alteration of a dam without first thoroughly justifying that alteration and destruction and providing the local owner of the dam with a public hearing," said Sen. Schaffer. Sen. Schaffer said that no one is against the idea of having dams that are safe but that private citizens do have the right to keep bureaucrats from invoking heavy-handed actions on residents that are not really able to defend themselves from big government. Sen. Schaffer said that IDOT must furnish owners of a dam a detailed list of its defects and what the owners must do to put the dam in compliance with state standards The bill is effective Jan. 1, 1980 and was sponsored in the House by Rep.
