i «K :«ft*j PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. OCTOBER It, I»79 On The Sidelines By Dick ^btM. Tfc The Warriors are hosting an old foe tonight, the Crystal Lake Tigers. After last weeks one point loss to Jacobs the conference leader, the Warriors are ready and willing to take on the Tigers. The Warriors looked bright in spots, and if they can ever convert an extra point, they will make teams take notice of them in the conference They played their best'and lost last week, and I guess that is all we can ask of any group of boys. Dave D'Angelo's kickoff return for a T.D. was something to waty&. Pete Ritthaler being very alert picked off a lateral for another T.D. The fine defensive play of the Warriors again stood out like a sore thumb. < * But, they only pay off oh the scoreboard, and it is about time the Warriors make their move this season. A little information for you fans who are wondering why teams are trying to score cm the Warriors in the closing minutes, when the game is almost already won. I* happened at Woodstock, and again last week at Jacobs. The Fox Valley Conference has set up a 10 point margin in case of multiple ties for the .Conference championship. If two teams tie for the championship, then the winner is picked on a head to head basis. Thus, if Crystal Lake and Woodstock tied. Crystal Lake would win, because of their win over the Streaks. If three or more teams are involved then the 10 point margin goes into effect. A team can win for the playoffs by only 10 points. This eliminates a team pouring it on 70 to 0 or more. It also works in reverse on the 10 point system. _ When the season ends and there arie three or more teams tied, they go game by game for every team the total points. Last week Crystal Lake Central beat Cary Grove 37 to 14. Instead of the 23 point margin, they have only a 10 point margin. Woodstock beat the Warriors 21 to 12, but were looking for another score for an additional point. According to Bill Blankenhorn, the McHenry A.D., it is the best system die conference came up with, and although it will be talked about at the end of the season, this is the way it will stand for the year. I agree that there is something better in the winds for deciding the championship, but have as yet to come up with a good solution. A flip of the coin is out. No way would I agree to a flip of the coin to decide if a team should qualify for the state playoffs. Dundee won a flip in the Northwest conference several years ago, and people are still talking about it. ' Hope this puts your mind a tease when you see a team in the closing seconds trying to score. It could backfire, and almost did last Saturday afternoon at Jacobs. Sue Hutchinson lost in the finals of the Fox Valley to Debbie Proschaska for the second time this season. Going into her final match of the season today Sue is 25 and 2 on the year. Not a bad record for anyone, and Sue should be the recipient of a bouquet of roses for her fine job this season. ' . Next week we hope to catch up on all the other Sports activities at MCHS. They are coming fast and furious, and time doesn't permit one to cover all the activities. The crystal ball last week went unbroken for the first time this season. Six for six is not a bad average, so this week we will try and continue our good fortune. I like the spirit of the gang at McHenry high, so I'm . going out on a big limb and pick the Warriors over the Tigers Friday night in the upset of the season. For you Warriors reading this, don't let me down, I really think the time has come for the BIG ONE. Crystal Lake South to finally after six losses, to win over Crown. Jacobs to beat Dundee. Can't understand Dundee being in second place. The Streaks to humble Cary Grove, (you can bet it will be a 10 point margin). St. Ed's with their speed to beat Marian, and maybe I can make the Skyhawks mad enough to win one as I pick Valley Lutheran to beat them easily. •••••••••••••••••••# : MARIAN : CENTRAL SPORTS NOTES The Marian Central Catholic high school volleyball team downed Woodstock in a best two-out-of-three meet last Saturday. Woodstock, which was un defeated coming into the meet, was beaten in the first and third games: 20 to 14 and 20 to 18, respectively. Marian was defeated in the second game, 20 to 8. Saturday's win leaves Marian's record to date at 9 and 6. 1 Sandy Kasting of Wonder Lake, was the day's high scorer Parkland girls' Softball team won the Fox Valley Eight Conference title last Saturday. The Montini girls' softball team placed second with a 4-1 record, being handed their only loss by the powerful hitting Richmond team. The girls' first place bid was destroyed by Richmond in the second game of the season.^the team, with a never say die spirit, defeated Avon, Hebron, and Fox River Grove, in Conference play to secure second place. In a non-conference game, the Mustangs overhwelmed St. Mary's of Woodstock by a score of 42 to 7 proving the winning spirit of the team was not af fected by the loss to Richmond. The girls are to be congratulated for their hard work and team spirit. Avon 7 - Montini 25. Richmond 17 - Montini 9. Hebron 6 - Montini 17. Fox River Grove 7 - Montini 18. St. Mary's 7 - Montini 42.
