If you add a new kitten to your household, help it off to a good start by following a few basic rules:' * n First, don't • buy a kitten younger than six weeks old. Kittens are weaned from , their mothers starting at about four weeks, and need some practice at eating solid foods. Don't expect your kitten to subsist entirely on milk. Kittens grow very rapidly and need a balanced blend of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, generally available in commercially prepared cat foods. A kitten continues to grow until it is about six months old and will need several small feedings during the day for proper nourishment. Try to feed the pet in the same place, at about the same time. Table food may be used to sup plement, but not replace, a balanced cat food. Fresh water should always be available. Second, give your kitten a home of its own. A shallow box or basket lined with warm material and placed away from drafts will do fine. Any small animal is easily chilled, and your kitten will' miss the warmth of its mother and litter mates. Cats and kittens are naturally tidy and need a litter box if they live indoors. Two or three inches of sawdust, shredded paper or commerical litter in a pan about 18 inches square is all you need. Remove the solid waste once a day and change the litter material weekly. A clean litter pan encourages good toileting habits in kittens and cats. The healthiest cats are those immunized against the serious viral diseases that often attack felines. These infections in clude rabies, feline distemper, rhinotracheitis and other respiratory infections. Most viral diseases spread very' rapidly and can kill kittens in a very few days. The viruses float through the air or may be passed by nose-to-nose contact. If you're caring for a l o n g ^ h a i r e d k i t t e n , regular grooming is / a must. Comb (don't brush) the kitten thoroughly each d^y to remove loose hair and prevent matting and tangling. Even short-haired types will benefit from an occasional grooming to remove the loose hairs that may accumulate in the cat's stomach as a hair ball. Occasionally kittens arrive from pet shops or private owners with internal or ex ternal parasites. If you think your kitten has fleas, there are several insecticides matfe especially for cats. Flea collars are very effective, but the animal's neck should be checked regularly for signs "of irritation. For control of in ternal parasites, ask your veterinarian to recommend the appropriate product. A professional examination of a stool specimen will help determine the type of parasite present, and your veterinarian will then calculate the proper1 dosage to safely rid your pet of the internal pests. Dr. Stear regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet otoners. He suggest" that readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems. * * * * Bad politicians are put into office by good citizens who failed to vote. PAGE »- PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER M. It7» self-absorbed. Higher than pleasure-seeking is the pursuit of worldly success. But since worldly success centers on self, it is both limited and tem porary. As man lives through these discoveries, he learns that the Path of Desire is not enough. If the Path oi Desire truly satisfied, the Path of Renun ciation would never be needed. But it is. 1 The Path of Renunciation begins with service to neighbor. It is superior to self-service but a person can only do so much for others, and though human service is much more satisfying than vain pleasure- seeking, it is still finite. Ultimate happiness comes when one ascends to the Pur suit of Union, the most ad vanced degree of the Path of Renunciation. It implies an opening up to God in con-* templation and a surrender of self. Christianity has been holding up the same goal for 2,000 years. Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your god with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your min- d...and you shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt. 22:37-39). There really is more to life than looking out for number one. For a free copy of the Christopher News Notes, "Prayer," send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to The Christophers, 12 E. 48th St., New York, NY 10017. Who's Number One? In the 1960's the in-phrase was "do your own thing." It was self-oriented but it allowed for some altruism and a certain individuality of style in ex pressing one's idealism. Doing your own thing for some was a way of finding "fulfillment" in serving^ others. Today there seems to be a much narrower view of life. We're swinging back to the 19th-century: Darwinian individualism, "the survival of the ^ fittest." Reaching out to help others is considered by many to be neurotic. Robert Ringer, a popular self-help writer says, "Con centrate on looking out for Number One. I'm sure you have enough problems of your own without worrying about helping others." This is the pseudo-wisdom . of the "me generation," and it is spiritually bankrupt. Seeking one's own satisfaction without regard for others is, to say the least, shortsighted because we all need love and only love can beget love. But how do you help a person to see this? I don't think there's one simple answer to the complex problem of truth. Some at tempts are quite ancient. The Hindu, for instance, uses Yoga to achieve this ultimate goal. Yoga is based on a theology which teaches two paths of development in life: the Path of Desire and the Path of Renunciation. The Path of Desire begins with man's craving for pleasure. Hindu faith says pleasure is good, but eventually it becomes unsatisfying because it is too restricting, too * « * * There's never any scarcity of excuses for do ing what you want to do. * • * * What this country needs is good people, and you can do your part along this line.
