LYLE KRAUSE PHOTO Sixteen McHenry county citizens have completed the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (MCESDA) auxiliary police training course according to John J. Shay, director of MCESDA. The course was conducted by Wayne Aten, captain of the Auxiliary Deputy Sheriffs and MCESDA Auxiliary Police. The 25-hour course consisted of instructions in public relations; departmental rules and regulations, criminal law, - arrest, search and seizure, protection of property, county ' geography, traffic control, police radio communications, tornado spotting and radiation hazards. The auxiliary police are 1 always under the direct control of the chief law enforcement officer of the jurisdiction where they are called. This couldbe the sherriff or chief of police. They have been trained primarily to assist the police in disasters and emergencies. This preliminary training also makes these graduates eligible to enroll in the next auxiliary deputy sheriff training course which is approximately 150 hours in length. The auxiliary police par-, ticipate in an ongoing training program by assisting the sheriff or police departments at various civic events including the County fair, festivals, Founder's day, school sports activities, etc. The par ticipation at these events enable the volunteers to assist and serve as a back up to the police, gaining better proficiency for them and a tax savings to local residents. These men and women volunteer their lime and buy their own materials, including uniforms. Shay said there is a turnover in members of this division with many entering police or para-police positions. He said that over 70 men and women fall into this category since th* program inception in 1972. A century ago, the act of rounding up a crew of men and horses to track down an outlaw was an effective law en: forcement tool.
