Because the school is privately funded and students must pay tuition, this scholarship will be of great assistance to its recipient. A fund raising campaign is planned for the near future. The school provides an education for 30 area students who otherwise would probably not attend high school. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Agriculture Today by Ed Curran U.S. Department of Agriculture Agriculture today isn't simply big business, it's America's biggest business. Its assets exceed $800 billion. That's about 75 percent the assets of all manufacturing corpora tions in the nation. It also employs more workers than the nation's transportation, auto and steel industries com bined. ast year, the cash receipts om farm marketings--the ioney farmers received for le livestock and the crops old from their farms-- totaled a record $110 billion. That's up from a previous high of $96 billion in 1977, more than double the total of 1970. Farm marketings of livestock and livestock products totaled $58.0 Mition. Marketings of crops totaled $52 billion, mark ing the first time since 1973 that livestock marketings topped that for crops. Prior to 1974, cash receipts for livestock--meat animals, dairy products, poultry and eggs--had topped those for crops each year for a half century. But, all that came to a halt in 1974. That year, farmers' cash receipts for crops totaled $51 billion--or $10 billion more than those for livestock. That trend con tinued in 1975 and 1976. In 1977, it was close (if you can call a $1 billion difference close), with crop receipts totalling $48.5 billion and those for livestock, $47.5 billion. A breakdown of livestock re ceipts for 1978 shows receipts for meat animals (cattle and hogs) at $37.4 billion; those for dairy products, $12.7 bil lion; and those for poultry and eggs at $8.1 billion. On the crops side, food grains (wheat and rice) brought $5.9 billion; feed grains (corn, sorghum, barley and oats) $10.9 billion; cotton, $3.4 bil lion; tobacco, £2.5 billion; oil bearing crops (mostly soy beans) $11.9 billion; vege tables, $6.1 billion and fruits and nuts, $5.4 billion. A state-by-state breakdown shows California, Iowa, Texas, Illinois and Minnesota in familiar positions last year-- leading all states in cash re ceipts. was up from $7.1 billion in 1977. Then came Texas with $7.3 billion (versus $6.9 bil lion the year before); Illinois, with $6.3 billion (against $5.8 billion in 1977), and Minne sota, with $4.9 billion (versus $4.3 billion in 1977). Those five states accounted for a third of the national total. In the matter of livestock re ceipts, Iowa led with a $5.4 billion total. Texas was sec ond with $4 .4 billion; Califor nia, third, with $3.3 billion. Wisconsin was next with a $3.0 billion total and Nebras- ' ka, fifth, with a $2.9 billion total. On the crops side, California led with a $7.1 billion total. Illinois was second with $5.8 billion. Followed by Iowa and.' Texas--in a virtual tie--with $2.9 billion each. Florida was in fifth position with a $2.4 billion total.
