ENTRANCE IS AT THE NORTH END Perspective THE CONSCIENCE OF INDIA BY RONALD REAGAN Few Americans will recognize the name of Jaya Prakash Narayan, who died on Oct. 8 at the age of 77. But there is probably no one in India who did not know "J.P.", as he was called, and his influence will probably live on as long as that of his more famous companion, Mohandas Gandhi. As a young man, Narayan was an ardent Indian nationalist, working with Gandhi to free his country from British colonialism. But unlike Gandhi, Narayan was a Marxist. He looked forward to "the revolution of the proletarian", the "ex propriation of the ex- I0HNL FREUNO Freund Funeral Home Serving Wonder Lake and Chicagoland Area 815-728-0233 7611 HANCOCK DR WONDER LAKE propriators", the heightening of class warfare - all those things that so excite the Marxist fancy. Somewhere along the way J.P. Narayan began to see that Marxism was the wrong path for India, and ultimately for mankind, It was built on hatred, on class warfare, on pitting citizens against citizens. It mocked the Gandhian ideal of non-violence and voluntary cooperation. It held forth the goal of an Indian state con trolling all livelihood and social relations in the name of the people. So, Narayan turned away from Marxism..He was a founder of the Indian Socialist party, but it was a kind of socialism unlike the centralized state power we think of when we hear the word. ' N J.P.'s "socialism" was based on the idea of "Sarvodaya", a society of self-reliant, cooperative", morally strong citizens, living lives of inner satisfaction, non-violence and non-exploitation. His vision of socialism had little room for a state of national government. "I was not sure", he wrote years later, "if the state would wither away completely. But I am sure that it is one of the noblest goals of social endeavor to ensure that the powers and functions and spheres of the state are reduced as far as possible. I am an ardent believer in the maxim that government was the best that governed the least." Even the democratic socialist state, Narayan con cluded, was not a solution but a m McHEMFlV M c H E N R Y 3 8 S 0 1 1 1 1 25 ALL SEATS 1 25 STARTS FRIDAY THE AMITWILLE ORROR FM., HON. In 1952 he left the Socialist party of India, which he had helped to found. Instead of party politics, which he believed to be hopelessly corrupt, he set out to generate a people's movement based on the principles of Gandhi. For the next 25 years he mercilessly criticized a national government which taxed its people for expensive technologies and atomlt weapons wjyile ignoring the real human condition of 80 percent of India's people in its villages. And he fearlessly spoke out a g a i n s t g o v e r n m e n t a l corruption, so much so that he was repeatedly jailed. Yet in the end it was his jailer, Indira Gandhi, who fell from grace, and J.P. Narayan went free, adored by millons. Through it all J.P. continued to teach his people the real ] of freedom and justice. He < said,' "We can march toward * free society only when in our day-to-day life we are self- reliant and have learnt the art of cooperation. Centralized power can never take us toward a free society." The rich reviled him because he encouraged self-reliance and independence among the poor. The high caste Brahmins feared him because he taught the immorality of the caste system. Leaders in power jailed him because he attacked their corruption. Communists hated him because he, not they, had won the allegiance of the people. Now, at his passing, millions mourn Jaya Prakash Narayan as the soul of integrity and the conscience of India. Though he is now gone, his teachings will live on. We can profit from them, for they parallel the ideals that have done so much to make us strong and free. ientkmsqUmc the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning system First Hour of Rental $1.00 per hour . . . for every hour thereafter.
