It is one of mankind's more painful and disabling ail ments . Bursitis, says the American Medical Association, means in flammation of a lubricating sac about a joint. The sac, called a bursa, is similar to a collapsed balloon with some fluid inside. It is located at various places in the body where joihts or tissues touch and rub. Without cushion ing there would be friction. Bursitis can hit many points in the body, but most often oc curs in the shoulder, elbow or knee. In almost every case bursitis follows unaccustomed strain or overuse of a limb. If you get bursitis, no one need suggest that you see a doc tor. The pain is so acute that you will be the first to seek relief. There is much your doctor can do to relieve the pain and promote healing. One of the mainstays in treatment is a mild pain killer. Cortisone-type drugs have been used with some success. Heat treatments also have their place in bursitis therapy. In extreme cases, surgery may be required. The basic treatment is com plete rest in bed. Anything that will lessen the chance of the afflicted joint being moved will ease the pain and speed healing. Like bearings in mechanical things, your bursa stay trouble- free much longer if you warm up slowly and let them get fully lu bricated before you race the motor. October 6, 1979 will probably stand os a rod latter day for tho financial com munity. What occurred ^caused monetary and financial tidal waves likely to be felt for sometime. The following week prime interest rates leaped a full percentage point at some of the largest banks and the price of gold took a nose dive, leveled off momentarily, then zoomed to record highs. The stock market had its largest one-day loss in five years and set an all time record for the number of shares traded. Prior to October 6th, the goal of the Federal Reserve Board had been to attempt to slow inflation by influencing the interest rate as directly as possible by effectively con trolling a key barometer called the Federal Funds rate. Now the emphasis of the Fed is to directly control the supply of money. Moves they took to accomplish this included in creasing certain reserve requirements of member banks and announcing a hefty increase in the discount rate. Both actions should result in restricted monetary growth. Nonethiess. only time will tell whether the drastic policy change will pay off in cooling down the hottest in flation we've seen.
