Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 5, 1929) The first airplane express service for McHenry was inaugurated last week when a Thanksgiving turkey was brought from Waukegan to Mr. and Mrs. George Bohr of this city by Pilot Earl Peterson in his blue and silver Lincoln-Paige biplane. To Mr. and Mrs. Bohr goes the distinction of receiving this first piece of express ever delivered in McHenry by airplane and it's safe to say that no turkey was ever known to fly higher than thisi one. Mr. and Mrs. Bohr entertained the following guests on Thanksgiving day; Mr. and Mrs. William Pries and children, Helen, Billy and Eleanor, of Waukegan and Earl Peterson of this city, all of whom enjoyed the airplane turkey. The filling of Wonder take, being made by the damming back of the south branch of the Nippersink, has been temporarily halted through fear that the cranberry marsh road, two miles south of the dam, may be flooded. A total of $101,498 has been expended for old age assistance for the first eleven months of this year compared to $86,433 for the same period in 1938. During the holiday time the volume of mail increases approximately 200 percent. It is a physical impossibility to handle this great mass of mail matter efficiently and promptly within a few days. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 8, 1954) McHenry led the county in sales tax payments in September. The total listed for the city was $23,058.98 to run ahead of Woodstock with $22,624 and Crystal Lake with $22,297.23. The above collections, included among t a b u l a t i o n s b y municipalities, counties and types of business, were released by the Illinois Department of Revenue. Leading sources of revenue came from food sales, general merchandise sales and retail business in drinking and eating establishments. Frank Oeffling received the coveted Kiwanis trophy after he had been selected by his teammates as having contributed most to the team during the season just past. Four zoning hearings are scheduled before the McHenry county zoning board of appeals. Robert and Agnes Kohler are requesting a variation to permit the operation of a convalescent home at the former Skidmore home on the west side of Pistakee Bay. Frank Zimmerman is requesting that a portion of Conway's Woods on the Pistakee Bay road be changed from farming to Residential I to make it conform to the adjoining classifications. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 12, 1969) By a vote of 22 to 5, the McHenry county board of supervisors has approved the expenditure of not more than $500,000 to expand Valley Hi nursing home at Hartland. All McHenry board members voted in favor of the expansion program. The county board of supervisors approved the appointment of John Shay of McHenry as civil defense director. He will complete the unexpired term of A1 Querhammer of Crystal Lake. Army Captain Robert M. Welter, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Welter, has received the Bronze Star Medal near Pleiku, Vietnam. Capt.
