(with long time subscribers) HAROLD "SCHMALTZ" MILLER They say the best guarantee for a long, healthy life is to be careful in selecting parents and grandparents. Maybe this accounts for the vitality of Harold "Schmaltz" Miller. His grandfather came to the Johnsburg community in 1840 to farm. Later, Miller's mother moved to McHenry and walked the long distance to Johnsburg to attend St. John's church. She died at age 95. Recently, Miller uncovered a 1947 Plaindealer that told of his purchase of the first television set in McHenry, located at his Old Bridge tavern Born and raised on the Fox river, Miller remembers with a chuckle the times he dove off the top of the Old Bridge and continued swimming until he reached the dam. Little did he realize that someday he would be the developer of McHenry Shores. He believes the Plaindealer must have been in his family since its beginning in 1875. He has read it all his life. His own choices in the hometown paper are So I Hear, Musin and Meanderin and Twice Told Tales. There's An Answer {by Norman Vit mm* lit IN'iilr unci tin ill Stafford IViilt') Grandma A heavy cloud o' anxiety hangs o'er th' horizon o' our festive Christmas season, wi* th' uncertain conditions, existin' in th' "Far East". Wi' poignant memories o' a certain December 7, an' th' tragic results, which changed th' frame o' society, in these United States o' America, a fear, o' what may be lurkin' in th' future, which may involve us, an' other countries in conflict, lurks in th' hearts o' many, especially th' families o' loved uns, who may be in volved. How does one go about findin' th' exact facts con- cernin' events which led t' this state o' affairs. Folks seem t' be losin' confidence in newscasters, all form o' m e d i a , s u s p e c t i n ' propaganda t' influence th' news, an' fearin' in-' volvement in foreign areas again. This granny hears, in me mind, th' words me own mother repeated, as we grew up, "Charity b'gins at home". Ye'd think th' lesson would be well learned, by this time, by those who're so liberal wi'th monies taken in taxes, from hard-working' people, in this country. Now, this ol' lady ne'er shirked an act o' charity, but it's like interferin' in a way o' life, t' try t' impose modern methods, conduct, an' social standards on another society. Th' charitable attitude is resented by many, an' serves t' inspire demon stration against it. There's resonable doubt that all intentions 're charitable, when one takes into consideration th' vast amounts o' profit, realized by investment in other lands, in order t' obtain th' wealth from th' land. Some folks'd rather live in traditional poverty, according' t' their p'ticular teachin's, an', t' this senior, seems that a lot o' trouble on our door-step harks back t' all these things, offered in th' name o' progress. It's a pity, t' find oursel'es involved in dire danger o' settin' off a real danger t' world peace. Though we seem t' b th' offended party, ye c'n bet your last dollar that we be a gettin' all th' blame, in th' long rim. Seems t' this granny, th' ol' adage might be best, "charity b'gins at home". Grandma Radtke When children resist eat ing what they should, some parents pack those nutrients into a new container. You might try filling an ice cream cone or piece of pita bread with cottage cheese or tuna salad. Not An Easy Role Q. I ani newly married with 14-year-oid twin girls added to my life. They have not had any decent home life or discipline in many years and don't show any respect for others. There is no respect for authority. How can I get them to cooperate? Can you help me handle my new role as wife and stepmother? I want to show them God and love and real family happiness. A. The' best way is to be an enthusiastic, radiant, outgoing woman. Underscore woman and play down the mother image. Go all out to make your home life interesting and be as companionable as possible with the girls in a normal, natural way. Don't try to establish a "we three girls" relationship, for that can be foolish. Just be a genuine good friend to the girls. The discipline that comes from real liking is much stronger than authoritative disciplinary parental action. My son-in-law is a civic leader, prays a beautiful prayer in public, is a good public citizen. He is also guilty of wife and child abuse. I have triedf to reason with my daughter, but she informs me he is her husband and it is her marriage. True as that is, those children are my grandchildren, and I am at my wits' end over the situation.01 caused child welfare to call upon them. This only alienated me from the entire family. I have Pfayed he will change. Have you help for me? A. Keep on praying for your son-in-law, but do it with a loving attitude. Let him know you love him and show him you are believing in him. That will give you more influence with him than being hostile. As keenly as you feel about the situation, you will, be well advised to stay out of it and let your daughter handle her own family affairs. Keep her mouth shut? Q. It is nothing for my husband to drink 18 to 24 beers a day. If I say anything to him he says I'm bitching and nagging. I'm really concerned about him. He never eats until I just make him. He says he knows he's going toi Hell so why keep on trying? Should I keep my mouth shut and pray a little harder? It seems the harder I pray the more ne drinks, so what can I do? PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALfeiK * r num a, UKCKMSKK ?. Itni A. Nagging, so called, hardly ever achieves a creative purpose, usually stimulates resistance. But love quietly given is another thing. It may work slowly, but ultimately it gets its way. This man obviously could stand a little building up in spirit and attitude. Love him, pray for him and believe in him. As a suggestion, you might look up the organisation called Al-Anon. It may be listed in your local telephone directory. Club Plans Dinner The Lakeland Park Women's club annual club Christmas dinner party will be held at the McHenry Country club Thursday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Santa Claus has been invited, and as he has never disappointed the club, he will undoubtedly make an ap pearance to distribute the three dollar grab bag gifts. Presents enclosed in a brown bag will conceal what each one is bringing, and it is a nice idea to include a name in the grab bag gift so the recipient can give a personal thank you. Members are urged to bring "Secret Pal" gifts if they desire, but names tor the secret pals are not revealed until the officers luncheon in May. Reservations for this party are to be made promptly with Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Burke and if transportation is needed we can make arrangements.
