STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH* So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR' Now is the busy time when we say we will do things right after Christmas - or right after New Years. In the summer, we plan to get at jobs right after the hot weather ends. Sometimes it is hard to get at tasks until the cold weather ends. If all excuses fail, a fellow can always use the old one "as soon as I can find time". When I go down town and meet so many people I don't know in this fast growing community, it makes me feel I am back in little ol' McHenry I meet an old friend like Ed Buchert. If you don't know about the McHenry Warriors Booster Club, you should. Am jin receipt of a card g the Booster meeting and other information. Jackie Officers of the club are: President - Joe DAngelo Vice President Virginia Anzinger Secretary Creutz Treasurer - Ron Smith The Boosters meet the first Thursday of each month at West Campus. Ron Creutz has promised that advance notice of Booster activities such as the Alumni basketball game will reach the sports desk. Maybe we can help boost the Boosters. Talk about having two strikes on you. How would you like to have the third strike called before you reach the plate? That must be how our hostages feel about the announcement that they will be tried in court before a jury made up of the "students" who are holding them. Pictures of those so-called students marching and shouting every day would indicate they are skipping a lot of classes. Arnie and Alma Anderson are cribbage players. (The lady wanted to know). Arnie was the winner of the American Legion tourney a while back. „ OLD SAYINGS: Bold as a pet pig. ADMONISHED: Mind your manners. Don't fill your mouth so full. The 1980 Winterfest committee and a well known brewery will jointly sponsor a full weekend of winter sports fun. Activities will be held behind St. John's Lutheran church on Route 176 in Island Lake. Highlighted will be the Midwest Dog Sled club competing for prizes and the thrill of dog sled, com petition. ^lso being featured will be cross country ski and snow shoe races with trophies in many categories. In formation on registration for these events can be obtained by calling 312-526-6272. Another exciting feature of the weekend of fun and activity will be a snowmobile baseball game. The Winterfest committee is made up of 11 area organizations and have been busy for weeks preparing for the weekend, according to Marlene Halverson, publicity chairman. Plenty of parking will be available and areas will be snow plowed. Drivers from four states and all ages will be defen ding their championships "so it should be an exciting weekend", says Tom Fischer of the Island Lake Chamber of Commerce. Food and drinks will be available all through the weekend on the grounds. "This should be a great weekend of events of interest to the entire family. But we don't want the events spoiled for everybody because of the cold, said Halverson. A warm up area will be provided but everyone who is planning to attend and enjoy the fun are urged to dress very very warm." The Warriors surprised a few people last week with % their big win over defending' co-champs Jacobs. They g & have shown great improvement over the past several $ £ weeks, and if they don't falter, could be a threat in the Fox ig 3 Valley this season. Their teamwork on defense was most g pleasing to Coach Ken Ludwig, and I think the veteran i* & coach was a little more than pleased with the offense last g: •jij Friday night. Two on tap th« weekend both on the road, ijij & tonight at Crown, and tomorrow night they travel to MCHS Swimmers Hoping For Banner Season Coach Mike Shanahan's McHenry High swimmers ' are hoping for a banner season. Although only a few lettermen return to the veteran coach, they have been working hard the past few weeks in preparation for the coming season. Tonight the Warriors travel to Libertyville where they lake on the Wildcats and Barrington. They hit the road early in the season, not performing before the home folks until Dec. 20 when Dundee comes to town. Squad members: Seniors: Pat Murray, Matt Nierman and Mark Petty. The Warriors will have to iiij i':i: overcome a height disadvantage most of the season. Gary ijij ijij Collin's "Gators" along with Crown, Dundee, and Cary ijij iiij Grove are what could be considered "big" this season, ijij ijij Maybe speed and finesse can prevail for the Warriors this ijij ijij year. - ijij iiij A good friend, George Haley, former coach at :£ ijij Wauconda, and still on the teaching staff sends along a iiij note about the Wauconda Holiday Tourney on December $ £28,1955. jiii The Bulldogs defeated the Warriors 59 to 46, and ram*£i jiji sure that members of that team can recall the game as if £ iiji it were played last night. WAUCONDA December 28,1955 McHenry Warriors Travel In Doubleheader The Warriors of Ken Ludwig take to the road this weekend for a pair of games. * 3;$ -ji On Friday night -the* ' Warriors travel to Crown to take on the Viking6 in a Fox Valley encounter. The Vikings last year's co- champs along with Jacobs are having their troubles in the early going this season. With only one regular returning to Coach Jim Hinkle's team they lost their conference opener last week to Crystal Lake Central. The returning letterman is Gary Gliesman, one of the better players in this part of the state. He led the con- • ference in scoring last season, and is averaging over 20 pts. per game this season. Others seeing action for the Vikings are forwards Mike Sczepanski and Fred Boxleitner. Guards are Kevin Kopp and Tom Flick. The Vikings are a tall team, and like to fast break. The Warriors fresh from a conference win over Jacobs, are ready and willing to take on the Vikes. With vast improvement over the past two weeks, the Warriors can make their mark in the Fox Valley with a win tonight. Tomorrow night the Warriors travel to Fox Lake to take on an old foe, the Grant Bulldogs. Tom Maples' crew are heavy favorites in the Northwest Suburban this season, and with a tall, veteran team they should prove a worthy op ponent. They defeated Gary Collins' Crystal Lake South team last week 74 to 73. It iJ(should^ be an interesting weekend of basketball, and ' the Warriors need your ittpport. ^ V fg ft pf fg ft pf *P ijij McMahon 0 0 4 0 Jaskot 3 1 2 7 & Pierce 0 0 1 0 Weinberg 2 2 6 Cepulis 1 0 0 2 Okpisz 6 5 2 17 ijij Huff 2 4 4 8 Srec 7 4 1 18 i£ Schmitt 7 0 0 14 Smith 0 2 0 2 ijij Justen - 1 2 3 4 Pintozzi 2 5 1 9 i? C. -- The television audience for professional golf is declining -enough to worry some PGA officials, and both NBC and CBS (ABC dropped out of the bidding for PGA coverage and CBS and NBC recently signed a new three-year con tract to televise major golf tournaments.) In 1975, golf held a 7.0 viewer rating. The game has always attracted a high- profile audience, a select group of upper-strata citi zens who are considered a St. Regis Pub 1237 N. But thus far in 1979, the golf viewer rating is just over 5.0--down from about 6.0 a year or two ago. In some tournaments this year it has dipped to about 4.0. This may be partly because ABC dropped out and there is, thus, that much less diversity of promotion. It also may be because ABC often led into golf tournaments with the Wide World ef Sports, a popular show. It may also be that there is no single dominant figure in the game today, to the extent that Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklous dominated the game for years. What ever the reasons, if the view er audience drops much more, changes might result in television coverage of PGA tournaments.
