Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Anorexia Nervosa.") Anorexia nervosa is a medical-psychiatric term coined to describe an aversion to food. Typically, a patient who develops anorexia nervosa is in late adolescense or early adulthood. There are only rare cases of the disorder occurring either earlier or later than this age. The disorder is found almost exclusively in females. Generally, there is a conscious attempt on the part of the young woman to lose weight by dieting. Unconsciously, the patient has already developed a food aversion. The aversion is so strong that hunger drives are almost completely overcome, to the point that the patient eventually does not even feel hungry. In initial stages, the food aversion and compulsion to lose weight is so intense that if the young woman does succumb to feelings of hunger and eats a decent meal, she will usually induce vomitting before the food is digested. Most psychiatrists feel that anorexia nervosa is a progressive psychological disturbance that gets worse with time. The food aversion seems to be associated with an increasing awareness and fear of sexual feelings. In the later stages of anorexia nervosa the patient may lose weight and ap petite to the point whetfe the life is in danger. Body weights of eighty or even seventy pounds are not u n c o m m o n . U n l e s s energetic treatment is in stituted as soon as possible, the patient very often will die of malnutrition. Obviously, professional help, preferably inpatient psychiatric care is the treatment of choice. As the symptoms of sudden weight loss, preoccupation with dieting, self induced vomitting and lack of hunger are unmistakeable signs of anorexia nervosa, it would seem inexcusable to delay treatment for any reason. Add "Hobbit" Showing Because of the large response for tickets to the Christmas offering at the Opera House in Woodstock, an additional performance of "The Hobbit" has been scheduled.
