Bqth indoors and out, seasonal activities encom pass the areas of food, fashion, sport, travel and relaxation. After a leisurely summer of basking in warm sunshine and the hectic fall rush of back-to-school, the arrival of cold, crisp weather is invigorating, and adds the drive necessary to go out and make things happen. New challenges arise through winter sports such as skiing, sled ding, skating and tobogganing. This is the year to conquer the al mighty ski terrain that was avoided last year, master a figure eight or travel to a new winter resort area. ENJOY HOMEMADE PRETZELS This winter, enjoy hot pret zels at home as well as from the carts of side-walk vendors. Homemade pretzel rods can be made with less salt than you would get in commercial pret zels.'. They are a welcome addition to any party to be enjoyed along HOMEMADE PRETZEL RODS Bread dough enough for one loaf One egg Salt Cut the dough into '/4-pound chunks after kneading. Roll out each chunk of dough with a rolling pin until it is V*" thick. Slice the rolled dough into (/z" by 8" strips using a pizza cutter or razor-sharp knife. Place these strips on oiled cookie sheets, not touching. Brush lightly with beaten egg. Dust with salt to taste. Allow to rise in a warm place until they are about V*" high. Bake in a preheated 350° oven for about IS minutes. Reduce heat to 200° and con tinue to bake for another 15 min utes, or until the pretzels are an even medium brown. If still slightly soft inside, re duce the heat to the lowest pos sible setting and allow them to dry out completely. The equivalent of one loaf of bread dough yields about three dozen pretzel rods. The mountains beckon, dis playing their snow-covered trails and high majestic peaks reaching far into the clouds-- the perfect weekend retreat. Ei\joy! For children, winter means snowmen, snowball fights, hot chocolate and homemade cookies, lots of smiles, and plenty of tears when snowballs land inside, rather than on, hooded parkas. Let it snow With the cold weather comes the need, and the desire, to keep warm, so take advantage of this opportunity to wear lots of clothes and layer, mix and match. Put on more and more in which to go outside--woolen underwear^ sweaters, shirts, socks, mittens--and peel off layers when indoors. Indoors. Often the solace for many a freezing nose or thawing foot. Winter can be enjoyed in doors for those moments spent sipping brandy in front of the fireplace, baking for annual family gatherings, or just curl ing up in a warm woolen blanket watching the snow gently fall to the ground outside. Winter warmth Although there are countless ways to spend the winter days, there arc still those who yearn for that drop of warm golden sunshine and to feel the spray of ocean mist against their faces. For them, winter is the time to travel to warmer climates. Ex ploring faraway, exciting places makes a well-deserved break in the winter season and provides a fantastic escape.
