The Christmas season is busy as usual. The annual Rotary dinner party at McHenry County Club Sunday night drew a large and happy crowd. As I looked over the crowd, memories of the past twenty odd years made me realize that many former members have moved away, strayed away or passed away. They are nice to remember and hard to forget. Right on the heels of that party came the Senior Citizens' Christmas dinner at West Campus with about 250 members present. George Collette sat at a table -- the only man with a flock of ladies. He really put the rest of us on the spot the way he waited on those girls. The Seniors were royally entertained by that now famous Sweet Adeline group. The singers said we should have seen them on Saturday night when four male singers were added. No question. Men do add a lot! But, I'd rather look at the girls. One fellow asked, "Do you know what makes that group so good? It is because every one of them shows they are enjoying what they are doing." That I believe. It is also true of every group that entertains for pleasure. Singers and musicians fall in that class. One woman was telling about depression days when she turned the collars and cuffs on her husband's shirts. A man across the table retorted, "In those days you were glad to have a shirt". Five McHenry boys were part of the seven member Lakers Running Club team that won the 12-13 year old Junior Olympics Cross Country National Cham­ pionship held in Hightstown, New Jersey Saturday, Dec. 8. Over 200 boys represen­ ting all states participated in the AAU event at the Peddie school in Hightstown. The Lakers qualified for this meet by placing second as a team in the regional meet held in Dayton, Ohio Saturday, Nov; 17. Despite winds of up to 50 mph and less than ideal running conditions the boys' team score of 235 points gave them first {dace and the national championship. The windows kept falling out of the motor home! FOX VALLEY CONFERENCE BASKETBALL Johnsburg high school is sponsoring a freshman basketball tournament on Dec. 19, 20 and 21. Par­ ticipating schools are McHenry, Richmond, Round Lake and Johnsburg. McHenry meets Round Lake at 4:40 p.m. on Wed­ nesday, Dec. 19 in the first game of the tournament. Johnsburg takes on Rich­ mond at 6 p.m. On Thursday Round Lake vs. Johnsburg at 4:30 p.m. and Richmond vs. McHenry at 6 p.m. In the final day of the tournament, Friday, Round Lake meets Richmond at 4:30 p.m. and Johnsburg challenges McHenry at 6 p.m. One trophy will be issued to the team with the best record in the tournament. If two teams have the same number of wins and losses, then the team that has the least total amount of points scored against them will be declared the winner. The Warriors have defeated Jacobs and Crown, while the Gators have defeated Cary Grove and city rival the Tigers from Crystal Lake Central. The "Gators" of South coached by Gary Collins are picked by the coaches along with the Warriors as the team to beat this season. Collins lost some of his regulars from last year's regional winner, but will still have three lettermen to call upon. Leading his returning crew are Dean Anderson a 6'6" center, Tom Neustetter a 6'4" linebacker in football and forward, along with 6'3" forward Bruce Christensen. The Gators for the season are 3 and 4, but their losses have been close. The Warriors of Ken Ludwig would like nothing better than to hang a defeat on the Collins crew. Last year the "pupil" defeated the old master twice, and that doesn't happen often to a Ken Ludwig coached team. The Warriors fresh from a win over Crown, and a disappointing loss to Grant, are ready and able to meet the "Gators". Having found the concept of team play, the' Warriors played super basketball over the past weekend. The defense has improved, and their passing off to teammates in the open is something to behold. Now if they can only eliminate the unnecessary fouls away from the ball, they could really be a tough ball club. With the FVC lead at stake, a good crowd is expected tonight. The Beloit Catholic Crusaders have the same record as the Skyhawks, 1-1 in the Shark Conference and 5-1 overall. Last year the Skyhawks defeated the Crusaders 72-54 and 72-59. The Skyhawks also defeated Grant High School last season on the Johnsburg court. The overtime contest ended 67-65 in favor of the Johnsburg club.
