Here's a quick Christmas quiz: What poem, called a "trifle" by its author, not intended for publication and only reluctantly included in a later collection of his work, has become the most popular piece of Christmas verse ever written? If you answered " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas", you're almost right. The actual title of - yes -- Clement Moore's famous composition is "A Visit From St. Nicholas." Moore, a distinguished professor of Oriental and Greek literature at Columbia university, wrote the poem in 1822 as a Christmas present for his six children. He did not plan to publish the work, c o n s i d e r i n g i t "insignificant" compared to his Compendious Lexicon of the Hebrew Language and other scholarly works. A young woman visiting the Moore family enjoyed the verse immensely and sent a copy to the Troy, New York, Sentinel, where it was first published in 1823. It was then included in countless elementary school readers and since has become an enduring classic, probably the most popular children's poem ever written. "TO become popular with children, a poem must appeal to something of profound interest to the child," says Lore Segal, professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (UICC). "And what could be more fascinating to a child than Christmas?" Ms. Segal, an authority on children's literature, adds that "A Visit From St. Nicholas" has endured simply because children love it and "they recite it to their children who enjoy it every bit as much." What few of those children may know, however, is that the popular image of Santa Claus - the jolly old fat man with white beard and sack of toys - owes its origin to Moore's poem. Santa's sleigh and reindeer also were the products of Moore's imagination - in fact, it would be fair to say that much erf this picture of Chrismas comes from "A Visit From St. Nicholas." How long will the poem endure? According to Ms. Segal, "As long as there are children to read it to." ipooooooooceoooosoo ̂ fPOLICE TICKETS| The City of McHenry Police department has issued the following citations. David E. Sod houses like this one at Prairie Homestead near Cactus Flats, S.D., were more comfortable than wooden houses and required very little lumber, a scarce and expen sive commodity on the plains 100 years ago. Centennial cele brations in communities across the state will commemorate South Dakota's hardy settlers who carved homes from the soil and towns from the prairie. "T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And Mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap; When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed.to see what was the matter; Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash; The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below; When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer; With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick; More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; "Now, Dasher! nowvDancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid, on, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys and St. Nicholas too; And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, The prancing and pawing of each little hoof-- . As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimeny St. Nicholas came with a bound; He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and shoot; A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he look'd like a pedlar just opening his pack; l̂londenjfahe STATE BANK WONDER LAKE HARDWARE 7602 Hancock Dr. | Wonder Lako, II. Coolants not only off«r protection against freezing, they inhibit corrosion and system-clogging rust particles. To keep your cooling system in the best condition, we recommend a yearly drain and pressure backflush of the system, and the installation of fresh coolant. Don't put it off. His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly; He was chubby and plump, a right Jolty old elf, ; And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And fill'd all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle; But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and toall a good night."
