Warriors Lose 78-71 To § Dundee In Overtime By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry Warriors dropped a FVC conference game to Dundee Tuesday night in overtime by the score of 78 to 71. It was the second loss in a row for the Ludwig crew and left them with a 2 and 2 record in the Fox Valley. Dundee is now 4 and 0. The Warriors seemed to have victory in their grasp when they led by 4, 63 to 59 with 1:45 remaining, but the Cards surged back to tie it up at the end of regulation time 63 all, and then outscored the Warriors 15 to 8 in the three minute overtime. Both teams started out as if there were a lid on the basket. Neither team could hit the bucket. However, the Warriors behind Greve, Sroka and Jensen managed to lead at the quarter 12 to 9. Midway in the second period the Warriors press began to take its toll on the Cards and Jensen with 2 baskets and a pair of charity tosses enabled the Warriors to break away to a 30 to 21 halftime bulge. In the third period the W a r r i o r s c o m m i t t e d numerous turnovers, and poor shooting led the Cards to get back into the game as the Warrior lead was trimmed to a squeaky 44 to 41 margin. The last period saw the Warriors maintain a 4 pt. spread until disaster struck in the final minute, when the Cards converted a pair of free throws, and a basket to tie the game at 63 all. Len Jensen fouled out, which hurt the Warrior cause with 4:43 remaining. The overtime was all Dundee. Using their height to great advantage, they managed to k^ep the Warriors at bay as they scored rather easily to win by a 7 pt. margin 78 to 71. Both teams played rather poorly. Shooting was something to be desired, yet the Cards converted 26 of 35 free throws to notch the win. The Warriors lost their cool in the final minutes, and instead of being patient played very loosely. The Warriors had good vocal support as the Rowdies were out in full force cheering the team on to a win. Next game is Wednesday against Schaumburg at the Elgin Tourney. Game time is ^3:45 p.m. Sophs Win Pat Wirtz's sophomores behind the fine shooting of Dennis DeJa who had 17 pts. defeated Dundee 57 to 49. John Huff followed with 12 as the Warriors are 3 and 1 in the FVC sophomore play. Once again a boxer has been battered into senselessness by an opponent. In this case, it was unjustified--by any stretch of the imagination. It happened at Madison Square Garden in New York. Willie Classen, near death as this is written after a two-and-a-half hour brain operation, was hopelesslyN behind his opponent at the end of the ninth round-7-2, or 7-3. Thus the tenth round was unimportant, especially as it was clearly evident that Classen was in deep trouble. (He had been badly walloped while somewhat helplessly on the ropes in the ninth.) > Yet the fight continued and he was allowed to come out for another round of bat tering, though he came out slowly. He went down quick ly and is a near-fatality as this is written. This is not something that happens only once in a life time. It happens every year. Boxing should therefore be recognized for what it is-opponents trying to knock their foes senseless, for the pleasure of assembled fans, paying to watch the battel--' ing. This is out of date, as is the Roman Coliseum, in 1979, though lions killing humans is admittedly more gory than boxing. Yet boxers are killed each year, others crippled or in<- jured for life, usually with' brain concussions. It really isn't sport-and its time is really over in a civilized world. - » - r nwn i, ubtbMHKK 21, Parks And Recreation Plans Ski Trip To Rib The City of McHenry, Department of Parks and Recreation is still taking registration for its weekend ski trip on January 25, 26 and 27, 1980.
