Internal Revenue Service, and because of this, have caused themselves needless worry and apprehension. To clarify some of these issues, and hopefully to allay the doubts these misconceptions may have caused, the IRS has prepared the following** questions and answers: Q. Is it true that if I use the peel-off address label, I will more likely be audited? A. No. The coded symbols on the address label have nothing to do with the audit process. They simply speed up processing by helping to identify taxpayers and the kind of forms contained in the • tax package they receive. Q. I was audited last year because of my large medical bills. Does that mean I can expect to be audited every year? A. Not necessarily. IRS has a program called the Repetitive Audit Procedure, , the purpose of which is to see to it that) no .' taxpayer is audited two years in a row on the same issue when there was no change the previous year. •• ' Q. I've heard that I can claim more deductions if someone outside IRS prepares my return. Is that so? - A. IRS Taxpayer Service personnel will give tax payers the benefit of every allowable deduction made known to them by the tax payer. 9. Does the IRS really have a way of knowing that what I report is, correct? A. The computer system used by IRS does match most wage, dividend, and interest reports. For example, if you forgot to report interest you received on your savings account, you will probably receive a letter from IRS asking about your unreported income. Q. Do IRS employees receive a commission on the money they collect? r. A. IRS employees, like other government em ployees, work on a salaried basis. The amount of money they collect has no effect on the amount of their paychecks. Q. If I owe IRS and can't pay right away, will they seize all my property? A. If you receive a notice from IRS that you owe money, don't ignore it even if you can't pay right away. Make arrangements with someone in Collection to pay as much as you can afford- it's called an Installment Agreement. On the other hand, if you simply ignore all notices and don't arrange for KEEPING REPTILES I've encountered a number of reptiles during my years of veterinary practice, but I don't ever expect them to become popular household pets, Turtles, lizards and snakes will probably always remain the odd fellows in the pet shop. Their dry, cool and scaly bodies just don't have the broad appeal of the more playful, warm-blooded pets. /^If your're considering owning reptiles, however J here are a few thoughts to aid in keeping them healthy. Providing the proper food and correct temperature for your pet will be your biggest challenges. Many reptiles are carnivorous, preferring only live meat. Small rep tiles, such as collared lizards, want mealworms, • earthworms, crickets and grasshoppers. Snakes prefer suckling (newborn) mice - and other small rodents, although you might be successful in substituting small chunks of meat that "wriggle" from the end of a broomstraw or string. Some - lizards, like the iguana, also need substantial quantities of vegetables, such as let tuce, tomatoes or spinach, and some fruit. All your efforts in selec ting the proper foods for your pet will be wasted if you don't also provide the proper payment, your wages and property may be subject to levy and seizure. I i.TJf 5 ' h t By Robert I. Stear. D.V.M. Manager of Veterinory Services Norden Laboratories temperature. Reptiles living in the wild use the sun to regulate their body tem perature, and to speed up blood circulation and digestion. Animals kept in terrariums also need a source of warmth. The standard aquarium hood is equipped with light bulbs which generate enough heat for some lizards; others may need an overhead heat lamp to feel comfortable. Your public library should have reference books describing the environment suitable for your reptiles. A major concern for any caged animal is fresh water. Although you will rarely see your reptile actually drinking, there should always be fresh water available. Evaporation from the water dish also adds moisture to the air, making tropical reptiles feel more comfortable. Turtles found in ponds and streams need several inches of water in their aquariums of terrariums, since they consume all their food un derwater. All snakes prefer a water dish large enough to coil up in. The soaking process is essential when the time comes for them to shed the outer layer of skin. You may notice that cold blooded animals are somewhat shy and retiring. They often prefer to retreat out of sight within the terrarium. An inverted bowl or length of hollow log inside the terrarium adds ,to their sense of security. Many reptiles are classified as endangered species. This means their numbers are rapidly declining, and the species may disappear permanently from the earth. For this reason, I don't encourage clients to keep most snakes, lizards or turtles. When natural habitats cannot be successfully duplicated, reptiles often refuse to eat and eventually starve. This removes one more animal from the already limited breeding pool, and reduces the chances that the species will survive. Many states strictly en force laws protecting en dangered species and heavily fine collectors who take protected wild animals. Be aware of the laws in your state before purchasing or capturing an unusual reptile or mammal. Experienced reptile owners will testify that some animals captured in the wild never resign themselves to living in captivity. It's not uncommon to see snakes with their noses rubbed raw after fruitlessly searching for a way out of screened cages. Those that do escape may die from starvation as they stubbornly hide in heat registers or crawl spaces. The average life expectancy for reptiles purchased by unprepared pet owners is three to six months. My advice to a prospective reptile owner is to read ^ available material before buying the animal. You might also ask your veterinarian for suggestions regarding housing and diet. Then determine if you can really support the reptile in the manner to which it is accustomed. Too many of these animals die because of improper care. Dr. Stear regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners. He PAGE • - PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20,1979 VA CCompensation Up SI Checks Reflecting a 9.9 percent increase in Veterans administration com pensation payments were mailed at the end of December to more than two- and-a-quarter million veterans, 235,000 surviving spouses and more than 85,000 children of deceased veterans, according to VA Administrator Max Cleland. The rate of a 50 percent disability goes from $232 monthly to $255, and a veteran with a 100 percent disability will receive $889 monthly, an increase of $80. A d d i t i o n a l a m o u n t providing up to a maximum payment of $? 536 a month (up from $2,308) are paid for specific severe disabilities. The new legislation also increased by 9.9 percent the added amounts paid for dependents to veterans rated 30 percent or more disabled. Also increased were the rates of Dependency and Indemnity Compensation \suggests *sthat readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems. paid survivors of veterans whose deaths were due to service connected causes or veterails totally disabled from service connected causes whose deaths were not the result of such disabilities. ' " Certain children of Ihese deceased veterans also receive increased com pensation under the new legislation. They include unmarried children under 18 as well as certain older helpless children and those between 18 and 23 who are attending VA-approved schools.
