Commercial Winter Fishermen Sought For Fox-Chain O'Lakes Commercial fishing without a boat? It's possible this winter on the Fox-Chain 0' Lakes in Lake County. The Illinois Department of Conservation is accepting applications^ from com mercial fishermen who can take^carp through Thgice at Despite an abundant carp population and rising fish prices, commercial fishing in the Chain has been con ducted on a very limited basis, said Department of Conservation regional fisheries supervisor Gary Erickson. What has stymied com mercial fishing of the Chain in the past has been the combination of heavy boat traffic and proliferation of stumps and other ob structions in shallow water, Erickson said. To avoid these problems,/ he has proposed seining fish through the ice, a method that has been very suc cessful at reservoirs in central and southern Illinois in recent years. Last winter Erickson went to the trouble of implanting several carp with radio transmitters for the purpose of tracing their movements around the Chain. Since the fish tend to congregate more in winter, he expected this tracking effort to be of help to a couple of commercial fishermen who had ex pressed an interest in the area. Unfortunately, the heavy snow and bitter cold conspired to keep fishing crews off the ice. Only one commercial fisherman actually har vested any carp out of the Chain last year - a few thousand pounds before the ice formed. "The weather was against him and he just gave up after a while because, it wasn't por-- fitable", Erickson said. This winter the biologist said he is willing to try the "beeping carp" (rick again to help the success of any bottom commercial fishing venture. Carp have ,an adverse impact on the more desir. because of keeping sediments stirred up. It is unlikely, however, that enough of the >N)tfflc bot tom-feeders could be removed to make a dent in their populations without extremely heavy fishing over an extended period of time, Erickson noted. As m^ch as 3.1 million pounds ofcarp could live in the 6,040- acre Chain 0£akes, he estimated. Any comtrtereial fisher man lntesttted in harvesting carp froth teh Chain O'Lakes must have at least 1,000 feet of .seine or 500 feet of i*ammel net to qualify for an Illinois commercial fishing license*, Erickson said. The 1-A commercial fishing license is $25 a year for Illinois residents and $100 a year for non-residents.
