Settles On In Curriculum Johnsburg Community Unit school board members, in session / in December, voted to accept curriculum changes for the 1980-81 school year, as suggested by the administration. Some of the changes will be merely a consolidation of courses previously offered. The board also agreed lo keep a two-year science requirement and a four-year graduation requirement for all students who began their high school career at Johnsburg. The four-year requirement would be reduced onlv in cases of hardship. Other board action in cluded the acceptance of both student trips proposed for 1980. The first, proposed by Cathy Abreu, high school language teacher, is an American Study Travel Abroad program to Mexico. The trip will take place June 10-20 at a cost of ap proximately $595. This trip will provide an in-depth look at the Mexican culture, and heritage, with visits to many places of interest including the National Palace, the Cathedral of Guadalupe, the Museum of Anthropology, Maximillian's Castle and a Bullfight. The second trip approved will be a cross-country ski trip planned for Jan. 18-21 by the JEEP club (Johnsburg Environmental Education program formerly known as the High School Outdoor club). The destination will be announced later Dr. Andreas was hopeful that the high school would be accepted to participate in the Urbana Reading program which would supply the, school" with $1,000 for materials, a management program and staff training. Jocelyn Booth, high school reading instructor, spoke highly of the program and its developmental approach. The program quota of 15 has been filled, but Johnsburg is receiving consideration as a sixteenth school. Steve Pollock reported that about 12 classes will be offered for adult education at the high school in con junction with McHenry County college. Some of the classes will be: typing, disco dancing, clock building, "photography, furniture refinishing, training for parenthood, physical education and cake decorating. Classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings and child care will be available for a fee. Pat Bingman reported that Johnsburg school district will be assessing local needs for nutrition education and formulatn plan for the district with the^ aid of a federal grant which is being received by the McHenry county regional superintendent's office for county schools. The district is looking into a lunch program for senior citizens. Dialogue seemed favorable in this direction. Dr. Ken Falkinham discussed the progression of the new additions and problems with various phases, but he feels that on the whole, things are moving .along- Some discussion was held on the annual board-staff dinner and funds were released for a down payment on the next event. National 4-.H news dedicated its November issue, in part, to 4-H in schools, which printed an article entitled "4-H Mini Fair" by Jodi Beutel of McHenry. The article ex plains the success of Johnsburg's mini-course program materials. used with 4-H A letter has been sent to Edward Parks, attorney for the Ridgeway subdivision, stating the board's in tentions on the bus issue.
