STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Junior Varsity Squad^ Wins Own Wrestling Tournament By Lynne Sobczak At the fifth annual Junior Varsity Wrestling Tour­ nament held at West Campus on Saturday, McHenry won the team trophy for the first time. ComDiling 124'j team points, the J.V. Warriors sneaked past second place Crown by 312 points. Third place was cornered by Jacobs (114), followed by Crystal Lake South (111), Zion Benton (107), Woodstock (94), Dundee (90) and Crystal Lake Central (39). This well-run tourney featured eight hours of exciting wrestling and always provides a great opportunity for these back- lip wrestlers to shine in their own right and sharpen their own skills. Warrior fans got a good luck at the techniques these ,young wrestlers are developing with the fine guidance of assistant coaches Brian Wilson and Bob Ludwigsen. Capturing championships for the Warriors were Joe Mullen (145) and Bob Roewer (185). Mullen, a junior, picked up a major decision over his first round opponent Joe Pooler of Crown, 9-1, and then went on to pile up a huge 24-0 superior decision over Bob Reck of Dundee in the semi­ final round. A 6-2 decision over Bill Martenson of Jacobs cinched the Cham­ pionship for the happy young wrestler. Roewer, a senior, pinned his first round opponent, George Korseniewski of Crystal Lake Central in a fast 52 seconds. In the semi­ finals, the Warrior pinned Andy Connolly of Crown to the mat in 1:26. A 13-2 major decision over Chris Pertiet of Dundee earned Roewer his Championship. Second place ribbons were earned by rScott Schmidt (126) and Tom Burrows (155). Schmidt downed his Jacobs opponent Dave Krempel in the first round with a 2:08 fall.'A 1:12 fall over Dan McCafferty of Crown in the semi-final round advanced Schmidt to the final round. Barry Vermett of Woodstock decisioned the McHenry sophomore in the Cham­ pionship match, 11-4. A 4-3 decj§ion helped Burrows past his first op­ ponent, Brett Muscat of Dundee. He picked up a superior decision, 20-6, in the semi-final round over Steve Riggs of Crown. Tom Boffer of Zion Benton stole the Championship from the sophomore Warrior, 17-13. Taking third place awards for the Warriors were Mike Connors (132) and Matt Ketchum (119). Connors dropped his first round match to the eventual 132 pound champion, Scott Bradshaw of Crystal Lake South. Working his way back through the wrestle-back and consolation rounds, the McHenry sophomore pinned Janier Salinas of Dundee in 4:01, took a 14-5 major decison over Jim Turner of Crown, and won the Con­ solation match over Jim Vengler of Jacobs with a 7-0 wipe-out. A 9-1 decision got Matt Ketchum past Mike Stanley of Crystal Lake Central in the first round. Erich Hurtgen of Jacobs pinned him in the next round, but he went on to be named third place winner as a result of byes and previous matches. Eric Karpinski, the Warrior's scrappy young 98 pounder, took a fourth place ribbon home from the lightest weight class. AcM vancing past the first round on a forfeit, Karpinski was pinned by Ron Grant of Dundee in the next round. He took a 10-4 decision over Daren Smith of Zion in the wrestle backs before losing the Consolation match to Joe Jestus of Crystal Lake Central. Also wreestling in the tournament from McHenry were freshmen Steve Woo (138), Kevin Hollian (105), and Mike Love (112) as well as sophomore Tom Ketchum (167). "That's right - then I get executed." Girls Five Lose Pair Coach Gary Gray's McHenry High girls' basketball team dropped a pair of Fox Valley contests this past week. On Thursday Crystal Lake South defeated the Warriors 52 to 32, and on Saturday they went down to a 48 to 41 defeat at the hands of Dundee. In ilhe South game the Warriors made a game of it for the first period, and then the shooting of Babcock and Goodwin of the Gators led to their downfall. Terri Bohlman ,led the Warriors with 14 pts. In the Dundee game the Warriors trailed all the way and went down to their 3rd loss against a victory in the Fox Valley. Sue Hutchinson led the scoring with 13 pts. The Junior Varsity and Freshman squads both fell to the Trojans, 21-39 and 20-38 respectively. Pat Haderly (112), sub­ sequently named the wrestler of the week, led the Warriors' varsity effort with a 16-1 superior decision. He now holds a 7-11 season record. A major decision by Mark Betancourt (155) brought his record up to i 0-5-1 while regular decisions for Brian Wrona (126) and Dave Ramer (145) helped raise their season statistics to 18-4 and 12-5-2 respectively. Kevin Hollian (105) drew a 2-2 tie with his opponent while Vic Betancourt and Ed Hughes won team points on forfeits. Betancourt holds a 9-6 record and Hughes now stands at 14-2.
