Planetarium Sky Show Political Corner & Candidate Unknown Worlds Revealed TOM PARSLEY Tom Parsley of Crystal Lake, who has served as principal of Marian Central Catholic high school since 1!>70, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the Illinois House of Representatives from the 33rd district. The primary will be held in March. Visits to all nine planets of the solar system are featured in "Exploring Unknowri Worlds," the new sky. show which will run through March 17 at the Adler Planetarium. Included in the in terplanetary tour is an amazingly realistic "lan ding" on Venus, where temperatures reach 900 degrees and the atmospheric pressure is as great as the pressure 3,000 feet below the sea on earth. V A stop-over on Mars provides a close-up view of one of the red planet's polar ice caps and of a long, deep canyon which winds across the Martian plains. xploring Unknown - Worlds" is the first of five sky shows in the special "Golden Years of Astronomy" series produced to celebrate both the fiftieth anniversary of the Adler Planetarium and the in credible achievements which have revolutionized astronomy during the past 50 years. "It's hard for people to realize just how little was known about our solar system 50 years ago," Senior Astronomer Phyllis Pitluga said, "but Pluto, the ninth planet in our solar system, was only discovered in 1930, the same year that the Planetarium opened." Until recent years astronomers had only an earth-based view of the other planets. Because of the earth's atmosphere, earth- based telescopes can only provide a fuzzy or distorted image, "and that led to some conclusions which seem very strange to us in the space age," Ms. Pitluga said. "One of the best-known misconceptions is the idea that there were irrigation canals on Mars which must have been built by intelligent beings," she continued. "When two Viking spacecraft landed on Mars in 1976 it turned out that whatv had looked like canals through ~a telescope -were actually long, dry channels and canyons." Although landings, probes and photographs made by spacecraft have greatly increased our understanding of Mercury, Venus, Mars. Jupiter and Saturn, the outermost planets remain unexplored. "We still know very little about Uranus, Neptune and Pluto," Ms. Pitluga said, "but we're learning more all the time. In 1977 nine rings were discovered around Uranus and in 1978 a moon was discovered orbiting Pluto." Astronomers have sear ched for planets beyond Pluto. "So far they haven't found any,", Ms. Pitluga said, "but it is possible that other unknown worlds are orbiting at the edge of our solar system. Maybe in the next 50 years we'll discover them." "Exploring Unknown Worlds" will run through Monday, March 17. Shows are Monday through Thursday, 2 p.m7, Fridays. 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 11 a.m., 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. For further information -on- special group showings call, 322-0329. Members and Senior Citizens are admit ted free to the sky show. Children under 6 are not admitted to the sky show, although they are welcome to the building and exhibits. Admission to the building is free. The Adler Planetarium is located at 1300 South Lake Shore drive.
