Louise Hipwell an­ swered a knock on her door, and was the surprised happy recipient of four long stem roses, in recognition of her fourth anniversary. Two lady friends, realizing the trauma of a person giving up a several decades habit of smoking, had sent them in encouragement for four whole days without a cigarette. Louise has been breathing better, and is now studying the physical reactions to becoming a non-smoker. Everyone who has stopped smoking a hundred times, knows the actual physical pain and feeling of loss that goes with giving it up. Another doer of New year's resolutions regarding smoking, is husband. Bruno. He receives a dollar bill for every day he abstains, plus the thankfulness of a wife who no longer has to wash smelly ash trays, or worry about burns in the rug. And if we can live through the next two weeks of being perfectly miserable, Bruno should be healthier and wilJL ,be wealthier. CALIFORNIA EXCITEMENT Barbara Mieszala, with children Pat and Becky, and her younger brother, drove straight through to California in 45 hours! This included a three hour layover in Albuquerque, N. Mex., where 12 inches of snow halted all traffic and closed down whole com­ munities. Barb was spelled driving for a few hours by her brother, but felt^ safer when she was behind the wheel. Becky and Patrick were fantastic travelers, enjoying their Christmas gifts, which were brought along, and the scenery. Their destination was Barbara's sisters' home in Palmdale. near Lancaster, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles. Phil had been staying there, so it was-a happy family reunion. Pat and Becky went roller skating on New Years eve. Disneyland was again en­ joyed by the whole family, "fhey were able to go on more rides than at any other visit, as there were not too many tourists. One day was spent pan­ ning for gold. They drove 120 miles up in the mountain to a place that has been dug about 7 feet deep by Barb's sister and family. Returning to the same J place on New years Day, they found their names to be the last visitors in 1979, and the first in 1980. That is a record of some sort.
