PAGE 4 - PI. AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 23.1980 Safety Measures Eliminate | To Your Health Hazards Of Winter Fires A Service of McHenry Hospital The winter of 1979-80 promises to be different from any other winter. The combination of strictly-enforced govtern- ment regulations and heightened public awareness of the need to conserve energy m£ans that it's not only going to be cold on the outside, but lower tem peratures are the rule at the office and at home, ac cording to August W. Hock, general manager, Illinois Fair Plan association. Hock, who heads the riori- . p r o f i t , , , i n s u r a n c e organization that provides fire insurance and home owner's coverage in 110 Illinois communities, suggests that, in efforts to keep warm at home, many people might expose themselves to fire hazards. "There's not much we can do about the cold in our of fices at work," he said. "Government regulations are pretty clear and there are severe penalties lor those who do not conform. "But, experience tells us that temperatures in some apartment homes won't exceed the '60's, and residents might resort to small supplemental space heaters. These heaters must be used with great care." Hock suggests following these simple rules for their safe use: 1. When buying a space heater, check to see that it has the Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. seal. This means the unit has been tested for all reasonably foreseeable hazards. 2. Keep combustibles away from the heater area. 3. Make sure the area around the heater is cleaned regularly. Accumulated dust can cause flash fires. 4. Place, the heater on an asbestos or tin mat. 5. A portable oil heater should be level to ensure proper operation. 6. If you're plugging in an electric heater, check to see that you haven't overloaded the circuits, a common cause of home fires. If your fuses or circuit breakers blow frequently, the TV picture "shrinks", or the lights dim when the appliances are started, you've probably overloaded your circuits, according to Hock. ? He also warned that using the kitchen stove as a source of heat is bad because the gas cuts down on the oxygen supply. The Illinois Fair Plan association, made up of all property insurance firms in the state, was organized to provide property insurance for those who find it difficult to obtain elsewhere. TV and Cleaning According to a study by re searchers at Cleveland State' University, the typical Ameri can homemaker spends 103 minutes each day cleaning the house and about 132 minutes watching the television set. Courthouse Squares IT'S DIFFICULT TO WALK OVER THE MAN WHO REFUSES TO LIE DOWN. kZ, Jack Spratt, the nursery rhyme character who would "eat no fat", is a minority- type person in American society toaday. Because the American diet is high in fat and heavy, in carbohydrates (sweets ~ and breads), nutritionists look upon it as malnourishment. While fats; and carboyhdrates are essential nutrients, more is not better. A vitamin and mineral rich diet would improve the nation's health, according to the experts. Adding to Vitamins A, B Complex and C as essential in the vitamin group of nutrients is Vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin. Basking in the sunshine will provide Vitamin D to the body; however, people who are penned up in shops or schools had better depend on Vitamin D fortified milk, margarine and fish liver oils which contian Vitamin D. It is essential in bone forming and strengthening and its lack causes a bone condition known as rickets. Vitamin E has been linked with reproduction ability. There are many theories of the value of Vitamin E in health but all the functions of this vitamin are not known. Wheat-germ oil and lettuce contain the heaviest quantities of this vitamin but it is also in whole-grain cereals, meat, milk, eggs, liver and most vegetables. Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting. Because of Vitamin K's incorporation in so many foods, deficiencies of this vitamin are rarely due to poor diet. Before childbirth mothers are sometimes given doses of Vitamin K in insure against hemorrhage, v Anyone who has pur- chased supplemental vitamins has noted that some supplements contain the notation "and minerals". U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances of calcium, phosphorus, idodine, iron, magnesium, cooper and zinc have been established because of their significance to good nutrition. Calcium is the bone and teeth builder as well as playing a required role in the blood-clotting process and in the regular contractions of heart muscles. The best sources of calcium are milk and milk products and also lesser amounts in green, leafy vegetables. Iron is a constituent of hemoglobin, the coloring pigment in red blood cells. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the various body tissues and returns the waste carbon dioxide to the lungs to be exhaled. Again, < liver heads the list as a' source for iron followed by green, leafy vegetables, egg, yolks, raisins and whole*' grain breads. Iron deficiencies occur more often when diet is low, during babyhood due to fast growth patterns, and as a result of menstrual blood loss, pregnancy and hemorrhage. Other important minerals for good nutrition are chlorine, potassium, sodium, fluorine-and manganese. Water may be calorie-free but it contains vitamins and minerals. More important, water regulates body temperature, takes part in digestion by bringing the venzymes to the digestive tracts and carrying the products of digestion into the blood, which is largely composed of water. Body cells are bathed in water and waste products are excreted through the urine which is primarily watepr"J¥tvi can exist only one'week* without water, say the experts. Knowing why nutrients are essential may make you more conscious of what is needed for a healthy daily diet. Next time you choose a food from a menu, ask yourself what nutrients it will provide. Is an empty- calorie food worth eating?
