A natural rivalry has been built up between those two schools, a rivalry that brought a big crowd to the game. A surprisingly large number of fans followed the visiting Indians to the Johnsburg gym. Size Was a problem for the Skyhawks, one big problem being 6'8" Scott Marks. Must credit Coach Bob Kies for teaching his team discipline in their play. They made mistakes as all teams do. However, they didn't fold under pressure. Wayne Andreas, School Superintendent, and his wife, Doris, invited us to sit with them. That was nice. And that pair had just as much enthusiasm as the students. Strange to see a Johnsburg athletic team without a" Freund, Schmitt, Frett or Smith in the lineup. At the half time program, Mary Beth Harbecke's cheerleaders and Lee Ann Cristy's Pom-Pon girls, about 50 strong, danced out and formed the letters JHS. Those cute gals also spelled training and class in our observation. They also had a mascot dressed as a Skyhawk who kept things alive. AN OPEN SHOT-despite three Zee Bees covering the net, Bob Zeller catches them flatfooted as he goes for the score. Zeller lead the Warriors with 17 points, and while Jensen and Johnson also hit for double figures, they fell short by a basket as they lost to the Zee Bees by a 60-58 score. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Crystal Lake Central Tops Wrestling Warriors 'Twas game. a good basketball Randy Swikle was all over the gym taking notes and snapping pictures? He ap peared calm, but couldn't have been. When discussing the lack of snow and abundance of rain this winter, most people end up by saying, "At least we don't have to shovel this stuff". So far it hasn't been the kind of winter to send people rushing to buy overshoes. Just wait. The price of gold today reminds^one of the good old days when, if you worked hard all year, the boss would give you a five dollar gold piece for Christmas. Looking over old photos is great fun. At our house we are in the act of writing names and information on the backs of those that are not identified/' How we wish some old pictures in our collection had been marked. We have one picture from Leo Heimer showing when McHenry's first water well was dug. Old Timers who could identify the men in the picture are long gone. We plan to print it one of these days without names. It is part of McHenry's history. There is a lot of talk about instituting the use of TV replays in football to determine close decisions. At one time I thought replays would be great, then came a day when two dif ferent angles were shown on a play at second base in a big time baseball game. In the first picture, it seemed no question that the runner was safe, The next shot showed him a dead duck. It's just like any argument. It all depends on your point of view. Harry O. Mueller (an avid Cubs fan) sends a clipping from the Trib about the famous Ed Walsh. Says he knows now why this Walsh is such a strong Sox fan. v, "Sure would like to be able to prove that this Sox pitcher is a long lost relative of the McHenry Walsh clan," says Harry. Must look upMhe family tree. It's the little thingr that cause the most trouble--- like a tiny pebble in your shoe or a piece of peanut under your false teeth. WARRIOR SAVE-a stray ball, but a quick Jim Johnson keeps it inbounds for the Warriors during the second period action in Saturday's game against Zioh Benton. Johnson scored 12 points in their loss to the Zee Bees. Both teams gave 100 percent effort, and for the fans in attendance, they saw high school basketball at its best. The Warriors grabbed a early 4 to 2 lead, and that was the last time they led fri the ball game, as the Zee Bees with their superior quickness jumped out to a 17 to 10 lead at the period. In the second period both teams continued to trade baskets and, with Sroka, Johnson and Greve getting into the Warrior scoring act, battled the Zee Bees on even terms and trailed 30 to 23 at the intermission. In the early stages of the third period the teams continued to trade baskets until at 5:45 a rare play occurred in the game. Four Point Play Len Jensen hit a 15 foot jump shot, and was fouled after the shot. The young Warrior then proceeded to put in two charity losses for .evidently shaken by the turn of events, Bob grabbed a rebound put it back up and was fouled in the process. He then calmly sank his toss and the Warriors were within three, 50 to 47. After Judson's basket. Johnson and Jensen again brought JLbfSjiVarriors to within one. At the 2 minute mark the Warriors had three balls roll around the rim, but just would not go in. At 30 seconds Jensen made a 15 footer and the Warriors trailed 59 to 58. Judson made the first of a one and one, and the Warriors had the ball with 15 seconds remaining. At nine seconds they called a time out to set up a play. Working the ball into the corner where Tony Sroka is a /deadeye, the young Warrior had his shot, but to no avail, it fell off the hoop, and the Zee Bees went home with a big victory 60 to 58. Tt was a real ball game. Both teams played good basketball. The Warriors had the opportunity several times to win it, but their luck ran out. Credit has to be .-givefi to both teams. The Zee Betes for hanging in there, sshfd the Warriors for their final period spurt that just fell short. Zeller Takes Command The final period saw the "Fighting Warriors" live up to their name, as they came storming back at the Zion crew. Bob Zeller hit a lay up, and 10 seconds he stole an inbound pass for another two pointer. With the Zee Bees Coach Gary Gray's McHenry High girls team lost a heartbreaker to Woodstock last Thursday night by the score of 51 to 49.
