PAGE 20 - PLATNDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 25.1980 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 30, 1930) Settlement of the litigation of the/McHenry County Oil coiE^any against the 1929 Illinois three-cent gasoline tax will make approximately $21,000,000 a year available for flbad building and maintenance purposes, according to the estimates of Frank T. Sheets, chief engineer of the state. Two- thirds of the three-cent tax will be apportioned to the state for bond issue road system and one-third to the counties for permanent improvements on state aid or secondary highway systems. Under this arrangement the state's share of the gasoline tax probably will be about $14,000,000 a year, to which may be added $6,000,000 per year from surplus motor license fees and federal aid funds. All of the officers of the West McHenry State bank were reelected at a meeting held at the bank. Harold J. Bacon was named an assistant cashier to take the place of Floyd M. Foss, who resigned to accept the position of cashier of the People's State Bank of McHenry. FORTY YEARS AGO /Taken from the files of February 1, 1940) "A dream come true". That expressed the satisfaction and gratitude which Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Justen feel as they gaze on their fine new funeral home on Elm street and Route 31 in West McHenry. They have realized an ambition, that of supplying the community and entire northern Illinois with one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind. Erected in memoriam to the late N.J. Justen, who passed away in 1935, the tan brick, colonial structure facing north, with green roof and shutters, presents a handsome picture. A wide crushed stone driveway circles the building while the colorful red sidewalk and evergreen sjmibs on the sloping ^terraces form delightful color contrasts. Two men drove their truck beside that of John Downs of McHenry which was parked on Ashland avenue and VanBuren street in Chicago while Downs was lunching in the restaurant. Passersby saw them transfer Down's load to their truck and drive away. The two men turned out to be thieves and took 100 pounds of St. Valentine's day candy that Downs was handling. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 27, 1955) Close to 100 members and guests were in attendance at the annual Chamber of Commerce installation service and dinner. Mayor George P. Freund was called upon to speak and he cited the many accomplishments of the Chamber during the past year He also presented plans of the City Council for the-^eqjjin the way of im provements and progress of interest to the community. William Burfeindt, Jr., newly elected president of the organization, spoke enthusiastically of plans for an active and progressive year, pointing out the im portance of the cooperation of all members. A 1955 drive goal of $27,000 for the Red Cross in McHenry county was an nounced at a meeting of the chapter board at headquarters in Woodstock. Included among those present were Gertrude Barbian, McHenry chair man; and Audrey Glosson and Verona Kent, fund co- chairmen. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 28, 1970) The McHenry public schools announced that April 11 is the date for election of members to the boards in District 15 and 156. In High School District 156, the terms of James Althoff, Donald Howard, George Freund and Carl Neiss ex pire. In District 15, the terms of Dr. Peter Griesbach, Henry Nell and Thomas Lawson expire. Twenty-nine merchants are cooperating to present the buying public one of the finest Dollar Day sales in the. history of this twice annual sale period. The fighting Warriors, refusing to quit in the face of adversity and a horrendous first half, stormed back in the waning seconds of the ball game to edge a fine squad from Barrington, 61 to 58. The Warriors were behind the whole game until the last crucial moments of the fourth quarter as a result of a grade school-like effort which netted them only 22 points in the first half and saw them commit a myriad of mistakes. However, a last minute rush behind the shooting of Heard, Freund and Hurckes gave the orange and black the cushion they needed to remain one game behind league leading Zion Benton as first round North Suburban play came to a halt. Fitness Programs Offered At YMCA Keeping fit should be fun, according to Joyce Heidenreich, the instructor of a new fun fitness course being offered at McHenry County college. The adult education class which will meet Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon is suited to everyone from the avid sports participants to senior citizens who, haven't exer cised for years, Ms. Heidenreich explains. "Everyone works at his or her own level. You don't compete against the others in (he class, you only com pete against yourself", she explained. The fun fitness class will include body movements for toning, trimming, flexibility, heart and lungs. There will be chair exercises and aerobic dance routines, she said, and the class will use jazz, disco and cha cha music to help make the exercise "fun instead of work", she explained The ten-week course is one of many being offered beginning the week of Feb. 4 at ^ MCC and in other locations throughout the college district as part of the MCC spring adult education program. For additional information or to register for the course, telephone MCC. A Solution A number of people have solved the problem of what to do with their retirement.
