Valentin played tough on rebounds in their double victory over the weekend with 14 points for the two games. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warriors Travel To Jacobs Friday, Host Hoffman Saturday The McHenry Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig open second round play in the Fox Valley when they play at Jacobs tonight. The Warriors are 5 and 2 in conference play, one game behind Dundee and Crystal Lake South. Back in December the Warriors romped the Golden Eagles 75 to 50. Since that time the Eagles have shown some improvement, and are a mighty foe on their home court. The Warriors after a win over Central and a tough loss to the Zee Bees will be wanting to get back on the winning track. The Warriors have been playing good ball in recent weeks, and are still hanging in there near the top spot. Tomorrow night they will host Hoffman Estates at West Campus. MCHS Girl Cagers Defeat Grant 62-42 A 26 pt. fourth quarter rally enabled the McHenry High girls' basketball team to defeat Grant on Monday by the score of 62 to 42. Terri Bohlman led the locals with 17 pts., followed by Sue Hutchinson with 14 and Vicky Kopsell with 12. "Mcllenrv vs. Grant Karpavicius Gieger Bitterman McHenrv Totals: S. Romic Moats T. It was the event so many had looked forward to for many moons, the fourth annual Old Timers Club baseball dinner. The tickets indicated cocktails at 6:,00 p.m. and believe you me most of the crowd was gathered 'round before 6:01. Success of the event was assured when the committee once more secured the services of Vince Lloyd to MC the program. .With a wealth of ex perience and a great knack of telling baseball stories, Vince had the crowd in the palm of his hands from the moment he swung into ac tion. Of course, it soon became apparent that our M.C. was the "WGN Radio s Voice of the Cubs". Lloyd Freund, outgoing president of the club, opened the meeting in his usual good style. Sitting between two young pitchers, Steve Trout of the Sox and Bruce Sutter of the Cubs, I had an interesting time. Both are high class young men. Johnsburg Tigers were there as usual. Met so many friendly sports fans it would be hard to list them. You can bet they will order their tickets early next year. ® Sorry to learn of the death of Mrs Petie Schaefer, a real pleasant lady to know. We had - fun talking about celebrating Petie's 90th birthday, only six years to go. Life takes different turns and we have to change plans. The celebration is still on. Petie will make it. That Blue Flu must be something different. Most of us don't know when the flu bug will knock us for a loop. Others announce days in advance that they will be stricken. What do they tell their children? Maybe the kids will catch on and announce their intention of staying out next week 'cause they are going to have the flu. What can Daddy say? Rib Roast A' rib roast .can be Unex celled in tenderness and flavor. It is easy to prepare, carve and serve. It may be sold bone- in or boneless. If the bone is in, it is called a standing rib roast. Steve has some big shoes to fill as fan^obmpare him to his famfw^father, "Dizzy", who was a big man on the mound for the Detroit Tigers. With a keen sense of humor and strong purpose,• Steve is on his way to a great career. Although he is a southpaw pitcher, he was signing autographs with his right hand. Maybe he can throw from the right side if the left gets tired. Buck Peden, Public Relations Director for the Chicago Cubs, wasn't there for the purpose of promoting ticket sales for Bill Veeck. Buck was full of in formation about his team and had; stories to tell. He has been around. Bruce Sutter, relief pit cher deluxe for the Cubs, proved that he will do real well on the banquet circuit if he so chooses. With a great record and being ihe Cy Young Award Winner. Bruce would be welcome on any team. He hasn't signed with the Cubs for this year. If you Cub fans want something to worry about, just imagine Sutter playing <>ut his option in 1980, then going into the free agent status. Baseball fans came from miles around. The "Pitch and Hit" group from Belvidere showed up. Another group from Palatine. Tom Murphy, an old friend of "Dizzy" Trout, toured over from Volo. George Frett came up from Crystal Lake. George Jackson came over from Woodstock to join his brother Art. Howie Freund again came back to the old home town and brought three husky sons with him. For mer members of the | On The Sidelines •X By Dick Robbitt !*j* jij: A reminder that next Friday night will be "Orange jij: S Night" at West Campus. We are shooting for a full house ;ij: that night. With over 1,400 students attending McHenry j-ji High School, and their legion of fans, the Warriors would jij: like nothing better than to see the gym packed to the g g rafters. We would like to blind the opposition, the Crown ;$ £: Vikings, with a great display of orange apparrel. The friendly banker, Don Watties, has promised toj!;i ij;i attend this gala event, and that in itself should draw a & crowd. The "Good News" Bears will be in town on February 9. ijij They will play the faculty at 8 p.m. The Alumni will touch ;i;i ijij off the evening with a game at 6:30 p.m. The Bears have promised six of the following to be here, ;i;i Robin Earl, Bob Avellini, Jim Osborn, Greg Latta, Vince ji;i ijij Evans, Doug Plank, Gary Fencik and Dan Williams, and ijij a possibility of Walter Payton, along with Dennis Lick. £i •jij Tickets may be purchased at the door. The Warriors have their last double-header weekend of ijij •jij the season. Tonight they are at Jacobs for a Fox Valley &i ijij contest, and tomorrow night will host Hoffman Estates, ijij Mike Shanahan's swimmers defeated Dundee last ijij ijij week. Victories are far and few between for the small ijij ijij numbered Warrior squad. However, the future looks ijij ijij bright. Gary Gray's girls are losing tough ones in Fox Valley ijij ijij play. One of these nights they are going to turn things ijij ijij around, and make a run for the crown. The Johnsburg Old Timers did it again. Last Monday ijij S evening they put on another fine display of food and talent ijij ijij at their Annual Dinner. An overflow crowd was on hand ijij ijij for the event. Vince Lloyd radio voice of the other team in ijij i;i; town did another splendid job. Steve Trout of the White ijij i& Sox's, Bruce Sutter of the Cubs, along with P.R. man Buck ijij !;i; Peden entertained the crowd. Jerry Wakitsch did another bang up job in arranging ijij iiii the program, and Lloyd Freund as M.C. got the gang in a ijij iiii good mood with some of his jokes. Phil Bartman was a i;i; i;i; busy lad taking tickets from the long line of people. Was surrounded at the table by a group of Cub fans, Bill iiii jij: Bolger, Clint Claypool and son Roger, Tom Hurckes, John ijij jij: Smith, Don Lowery along with Mike Rudi. Mike DeWolf and Harry May were greeting old friends j£ jiji at the door, Tom Bolger had his State Bank crew there, iiji jiji Rick Lane, Jerry Larkin, Phil Oeffling, Don Wattles, A1 jiji jij: Jourdan as usual was assisting in any way he was needed, jiji jij: Eddie Hall and Dixie O'Hara came over from Woodstock, jiji jiji the Belvidere Old Timers had a table, along with a group jiji jiji from Palatine. Judge Hermann was holding court at one jiji jiji of the tables, but no fines were issued. S.I.H. defended the jiji jiji Sox fans in the gathering, but left his sidekick Sib Whiting jiji iiji out in the outer room. The Jackson brothers George and jiji iiji Art never miss this event. Smiling John Bolton had a good jiji jiji seat along with Chris Wirtz. They also ate their share and jiji Ji more I am told. Big Don Bentz was all smiles, and had a jiji iiii right to be very proud. Son, Don received the Scholarship jiji iiii Award presented by the Club. Jim Meyer the A.D. at jiji iiii Johnsburg made the presentation. Had a little chance to talk basketball with Bob Kies the jiji iiii fine Johnsburg coach. Was happy with the win over jiji ijii Marengo last Saturday night. Bill Oeffling made sure that I got a seat, and John Huff, jiji ijij John McGee and Ron Conway took time off from a jiji ijij basketball game to be in attendance. Dr. Duane Andreas, jiji ijij Superintendent of Johnsburg was an early bird, and we jiji ijij could go on and on. It was a great night, and everyone had jiji ijij a pleasant time. Memory Lane this week takes us to Crystal Lake in jiji ijij January of 1937. In the County tourney the Warriors jiji ijij whipped Huntley 35 to 26.
