I»H0 Your Police Department by Officer Jim Fitzgerald Public Relat ions Off icer McHenry City Pol ice Phone 385-2131 * * * * * * t * I * * * First thing this week, I'd like to remind everyone about the two stickers which will play an important part in driving this year. The first one is the proper colored sticker for license plates for the year 1980. As of Jan. 1, there should not be any vehicles with license plates on the back, which do not have a red sticker. All blue stickers have expired and are no longer valid. If you have not purchased a red sticker for your license plates, I would suggest that you do so as quickly as possible. Until you get 'the sticker, do not drive your vehicle, as you will surely receive a traffic citation for having expired plates, and the fine is about $35. It shouldn't be too hard to determine when the sticker expires, because the month it expires is printed on it, and the date it expires is the last day of that month. You must have a new. updated sticker in place the very next day or you afe driving on expired license plates. Pav close attention to the red colored sticker that you now have on the plates, because not^everyone, has a sticker that is good for a whole calendar year. Some of the stickers will expire as early as June. The system used now is not like the old one, so a little extra attention to detail will be necessary for * a while until everyone gets used to the new setup. The other sticker is the hew McHenry city vehicle tag which, this year, is the same basic shape and design as last year's sticker except, this year's is red, and last year's was blue. If you live within the city limits and have a car, motorcycle, or whatever, you must have a valid current city sticker displayed on your windshield on the passenger side. I know that some of you do not like to have to put these on your windshield, and instead, just by the sticker and put it in your wallet or purse. This does not counL It must be displayed on me window in the proper place, or you could get a ticket from the city police. You can purchase your current city sticker at the clerk's office, located at 11 Ji N. Green street, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a m. till noon Saturday. As soon as you get the slicker, put it right on the windshield and avoid the chance of getting a ticket. We are starting to get a little snow now, against my fervent wishes for a warm and sunny winter, and everyone is outside shoveling the sidewalk and the driveway. Here are just a few suggestions for the task ahead. « Dress warm, and if it is bitter cold, either wait a while, or do a little bit at a time. Don't expose your face and-or hands to the bitter cold too long or you could get a good case of frostbite. Don't over-exert yourself and try to get it all done at once. When you overtire yourself, you leave yourself open to everything, from colds and fevers In hear! al lacks. Also, watch I lie fad Ilia! there may be some ice under I he snow cover which you may not get with the shovel or snowblower. Once the snow cover is removed, throw a little of the ice melt product on the steps and the walk, so the ice doesn't cause you or someone else a nasty fall. Remember, if you fall and break something, it could be a long wait for help to come. Lastly, does everyone remember the phone numbers for the Police department and the Rescue squad? In case you don't, they are Police department, 385-2131 and Rescue squad, 385-4414: See you next week! FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 6, 1930) I An important business transaction took place when William H. Althoff pur chased the brick building at the corner of Main street and Route 31 in West McHenry from Peter Williams. Work has commenced on the building and will continue until the store has been completely remodeled and ready for occupancy, when Mr. Althoff will move his stock of hardware into the new location. Much work will be done on the place, including the excavating of a basement under the entire building and the remodelling of the second story into comfortable living rooms. The league leading Woodstock high school team snatched a victory from our own Orange and Black in just the most exciting battle ever staged in the McHenry gym. With four seconds to go, Perkins sank a free throw to break the tie and win the game for Woodstock 12 to 11. « FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 8, 1940) The McHenry Scouts are celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. More than 3,000 Boy Scouts, Cubs and their leaders in the Blackhawk Area council are joining enthusiastically in this celebration. In a slam-bang drag 'em out affair, McHenry walloped Zion's high school basketball team, 55 to 18. While there wasn't the thrill of a see-saw battle to raise the fans off their seats in howling deliriums, the large crowd seemed to enjoy the many flare-ups. Quoting from S.I.H. column: "We are sorry that our mention of the Vernie "Pink" Harrison hand lotion factory caused him so much trouble. What with all the sample chasers, the boy couldn't get at his chores one whole day. Which reminds us that a card from Florida, addressed to 'Phibber McGee' was promptly delivered to Vernie. We've said enough about that fellow but every time we lay eyes on him it brings us back to boyhood days when he used to tag after his brother, Donald, on our pigeon cat ching escapades. What a nuisance that bird was. Melvin Walsh was another." SIINNYSIDE FOODS & EB'S FINER MEATS 4216 N. WILMOT ROAD, SUNNYSIDE, ILL. The quilt was discovered accidentally a couple of months ago in the attic of the home on Richmond road occupied by Rt. Rev. Msgr. C.S. Nix. A notation read that it was at that time the property of the Christian Mothers sodality but the name of the maker was not legible. In perfect condition and beautifully done, it is believed the.quilt must have been made by some local women between 30 and 40 years ago. What appeared at the time to be the making of a big news story in the wee hours resulted only in a poor night's sleep for two McHenry residents. The night police officer answered a call from the telephone operator concerning a continual picking of the phone at the local roller rink about 2:30 in the morning. On the insistence of the operator that something was wrong the owner, Mrs. Cepulis, and her father were aroused and upon in vestigation found there was no intruder-except two beautiful angora cats who were amusing themselves by playing with the phone, evidently causing contact at the main telephone office. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Febraury 4, 1970) "No new suspect" was Sheriff John Carroll's statement of disappointment made to the press in the third news conference in four days. He was referring to the week long search for the killer of Mrs. Jean Irene Bianchi, 27, of Woodlawn Park, McHenry. T w o M c H e n r y organizations have taken a lead in offering substantial rewards to the person or persons supplying in formation concerning the circumstances surrounding the death of Irene Bianchi. The McHenry State bank, which initiated the reward, has offered to pay $1,000. This amount was matched by the Gity Council. Someone believed by police to have either remained in McHenry hospital after visiting hours, or in the adjoining clinic, stole a quantity of capsules and tablets sometime last Thursday night or early Friday morning. ^American Viewpoints Human felicity u produced, not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little advantages that occur every day a Benjamin Franklin ***in 1980 ** COLOR *679» LESS TRADE The LIDO • SL1961W - NORMAL PICTURE ZOOM PICTURE COMPUTER Remote Control with Instant Zoom close-up Turn set on SPACE or oft Change channels Adjust volume up or down.
