JANUARY 30J980 ROEWER. - ROWING ALONG-With three victories over the weekend, Bob Roewer has bettered his season record to 5-4-1. Above, Roewer attempts to pin Rick Nelson of Jacobs, last Friday night at West campus. The pin failed, but Bob captured the bout by a lopsided 19-4 score. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD McHenry High Wrestlers Split Weekend Matches By Lynne Sobczak Wrestling a heavy schedule of matches last weekend, the, varsity Warriors won two and lost two. On Thursday, the local men traveled to Zion and lost a difficult non-conference match 30-27. On their own mat in Buckner Gym Friday, the varsity squad outwrestled Jacobs 35-30 in a conference dual. Back on the road last Saturday, the Warriors split a non- conference double dual at Lake Zurich, beating Mundelein Carmel 36-21 and losing to Lake Zurich 42-24. Coach Sobczak's learn is now 2-4 in the conference and 6-9 over all for this season. Winning four individual weekend bouts were Brian Wrona, Ed Hughes and Vic Betancourt. Wrona took a superior decision from his Zion opponent 28-0, won by a forfeit against Jacobs, picked up an 11-1 major decision against, Carmel, and pinned his Lake Zurich man in 1:24. This scrappy junior now holds , a 22-5 season record, including 5 falls. Hughes pinned his Zee Bee opponent in[1:00, Kevin Richter of Jacobs in 1;25, Bierman of Carmel in 1:26 and won1t»y a forfeit against Lake Zurich. A 19-2 record stands for the Warrior senior who, with 9 pins, also holds the record for the most pins for this season so far. Betancourt, a junior won two decisions 8-4 and 10-8, and scored two falls, 3:57 and 3:30. He has a 13-7 season record with four falls to his credit. Triple winners over the weekend were Pat Haderly, Dave Ramer and Bob Roewer. Haderly decisioned his Zion man 11-4, pinned Bryan Wills of Jacobs in 3:35 and scored a 16-1 superior • decision against his Carmel opponent. Injured in his fourth weekend match, Haderly was pinned down by Lake Zurich. A12-11-1 record is currently held by tlje MCHS junior. Senior Ramer decisioned his Jacobs man 6-1 and his Lake Zurich opponent, 8-1, then scored a 1:33 pin in his Carmel match. Ramer has a 15-7-2 record at present. Two superior decisions stood out among the three decisions scored by Roewer over the weekend. He topped his Zion opponent 20-1, Rick Nelson of Jacobs 19-4, and his Carmel man 5-0. This raises his record to 5-4-1 this season. Two decisions brought up Mark Betancourt's record to 13-5-1. He topped his Zion man 18-3 and earned a 6-5 win at Lake Zurich. Also scoring a fall orT Friday was sophomore Scott Schmidt, who pinned Marty Pergarsch of Jacobs in 3:57. This Thursday the Wrestling Warriors will meet Belvidere in their last home match of the season. The non-conference match will be preceded by recognition of the senior wrestlfers and their parents beginning at 6 p.m. The team will finish out its regular dual meet season on Friday when they travel to Dundee. Popovich Pops In 25-Foot Jump Shot To Nip Streaks In Triple Overtime 48-47 Sports Calendar A 25-foot jump shot by Tom Popovich from the top of the key gave the sophomore Skyhawks a 48-47 triple overtime victory against the Woodstock Blue Streaks Saturday night in the Skyhawk gym. With two seconds remaining on the clock, an inbound pass from guard Russ Beck at midcourt moved the ball over to Popovich, who managed to get off his shot just an in stant before the final buzzer rang. x Popovich shared high scoring honors for the Skyhawks with Tom Pieper. Each had 15 points. The 3 win enables the Warriors to stay within striking distance of Dundee and Crystal Lake South in the conference. The Warriors are now fi and 2, one game behind Dundee and C.L.S., both who have 7 and 1 records. The Warriors ran into foul trouble early in the contest, but managed to hang in there for a 14 all game at the end of the period.,,Guard Len Jensen was guility of three, and Bob Zeller picked up two fouls during the period. With Jensen sitting on the pines, the Warriors and Golden Ekgles battled on even terms until Jim Johnson's charity toss at 4:30 gave the Warriors the lead they never- let go for the remainder of the contest. A last minute spurt, with1 Anderson getting a bucket and a pair of free throws sandwiched in by Bob Zeller's basket, gave the Warriors a 31 to 26 halftime margin. In the third period, Zeller's quick three point play on the tip, and |iis intercepted in- bounds pass for another quick basket gave the Warriors a 10 pt. bulge thirty seconds into the period. Jensen who had returned to the lineup, along with his running mate Bob Greve got intolhe act and the Warriors led 45 to 36 going into the final period. Midway in the final chapter, Johnson's three point play followed by Zeller's two free throws gave the Warriors a 56 to 41 lead, and then the men in striped shirts took over. From that time on it was a parade to the free throw line. " • In the final four and one- half minutes the Golden Eagles stepped to the free throw line no less than 17 times. However, it was to no avail and the Warriors walked off a victor 67 to 59. It was a nice win for the Warriors. It was too bad that the officials had to- get into the act. With the Warriors leading by 15, a Ken Ludwig team is not going out to foul ? an opposing player. It was obvious the officials were trying to narrow the margin. The final two minutes took 13 to play, and had many of the fans disgusted with the whistle tooting. As usual there was a large delegation of local fans in attendance. On Friday night they lost to Jacobs 45 to 35, but rebounded on Saturday night to easily defeat Hoffman Estates 44 to 32. In the Jacobs game the young Warriors trailed throughout the game, trailing 22 to 12 at the in termission. The second half both teams played even, but the gap was just too much for the Warriors to over come. Denny Deja with 16 and Dave Williams with 10 led the local scoring. On Saturday night it was a different story. The Warriors and Hawks played the first period even, but then it was the Warriors show the rest of the way, winning easily 44 to 32. Deja and Williams again led the scoring with 13 and 10 points. Street how he got a total of 8 pins for two full frames. Some people have all the luck. Speaking of luck (?), now ^that B. Thompson is ex pecting again, you can see her name in this column a great deal more often: it seems to work that way for her. v Ron's Rollers won the pizza for next week and I hope they enjoy it, I expect a piece,in exchange for a little spaghetti. Wonder how J.K.L.'s will survive on beer and pretzels? High games were split between subs and regulars with D. Cameron, 236; B. Thompson. 206; T. Miller, 200; and J. Garde (miracle), 156. High series went to B. Thompson (see,J told you), 521; T. Stumbris (and I spelled it right), 521; and L. Johnson, 508. Splits were picked up by: A. Boeldt, 6-7; K. Lescher, 5- 8-10: and L. Johnson (who almost made a strike out of it), 2-4-6-7-9-10. Oh, almost forgot that B. Thompson also won a delicious pizza for 4 strikes in a row. What is next? The team standing can't be much closer and with just 6 weeks of regular bowling left it is getting pretty sticky. The weeks coming will be more than interesting. Just check these out. The early registration is needed to enable the team to evaluate their needs for the coming season. Last year was the first year that we did not have a registration in Feb. and due to the teacher strike, some boys missed the first league weigh-in. causing them to sit out the first four games1. So any boy, grade or junior high is urged to register now to play tackle football in the Jr. Football League of Northern Illinois. The firs>t 50 boys to register will receive a free mouth guard. Next month, strange as it seems, Major League baseball players will be gin training for the 1980 season. * • • * Intelligent optimism is based on a long-range viewpoint and pessimism is usually generated by a short-range view.
