By Sarah Anne Sheridan Pork is considered a cold weather meat and can be prepared in many delicious ways. Always remember that pork must be cooked well done--never rare. Tenderloin Hot-Pot il/i lbs. pork tenderloin l'/j c sifted tomato pulp 1 chopped onion 6 mushrooms Vi green pepper chopped fine 1 t kitchen bouquet 1 t salt '/a t pepper potatoes turnips Split the tenderloin in half or cut into slices. Grease lightly the bottom of a cas serole and fit into it the pieces of meat. Brown on both sides over high heat, then add tomatoes, onions, pepper and kitchen bouquet. Cover and cook 3 to 4 hours. Fifteen minutes be fore removing from heat, add salt and pepper. t Serve on a large platter surrounded by a border of potatoes and turnips which have been mashed together in equal parts.. By Carl Eiblet Jr. Question -- "I visit itiy parents in Connecticut two or three times a year to see how they are getting along, and I noticed lately that my Dad was becoming somewhat hard of hearing. My Mother said, in her positive way, 'Your father is getting deaf.' Last month, when I visited them, his hearing seemed to be even worse. I had a hunch, so I telephoned and located an ear specialist and took my father to him. When Dad came out of the doctor's of- ice he was all grins. He said, 'I'm jiot deaf any more, Tom, and, hey, I can hear those church bells. Listen! I hadn't noticed, but some church bells were ringing from somewhere in town. They found big wads of wax in his ears. Tell people that many times senior citizens are maybe not getting deaf when they can't hear well. They may have too much wax in their ears." -- Tom Z. Answer -- Thanks to Tom. Others who feel that they are getting deaf might profit with a visit to an ear specialist. Question -- "My husband and I have been inquiring about retirement com munities in California and Florida. We made some trips and looked at towns that were especially made for the retired. But we don't like them. In two of those towns all we saw were old people like us. We never saw a child. It must be very unhappy to live in a com munity where you never see a kid on a bike. How can we find a place to retire that is close to normal living?" -- Dot W. Answer -- I spent a day last month in a lovely retirement town in Arizona. At first, it seemed to be the last word but as I left the town I realized I hadn't seen a child all day long. I wouldn't want to live in such a place. Dot and her husband will have to look and look. Maybe write the Chamber of Commerce in cities where the climate may be at tractive. I should think they would rather retire in a small town that is normal -- not so many old people, perhaps, with some kids in sight. Some of those special retirement towns are ex pensive. Question -- "I live in a very nice retirement city -- Green Valley, Arizona -- and everything is fine here but one thing. It is a town with no cemetery. You may think that I am looking for a last resting place, but I am in no hurry. Everybody who dies here is taken someplace else for burial. You can't visit a friend's grave because there are no graves. A town seems incomplete without a burial place." -- Anna A. Answer -- I can un derstand Anna's idea that the town is not complete. If I lived there I wouldn't be disturbed by the lack of a burial ground. When I drive past a cemetery and see the entrance sign -- "Enter Here" - I step on the gas. Question -- "What can I do to get more money from my husband's pension plan? My husband died at age 54. His employer made con tributions for him to the Plumbers & Pipefitters National Pension fund amounting to $3,000. The plan had been effect for two and a half years when my husband died, but the trustees maintain that five years of membership ser vice are necessary before any death benefit can be paid to his widow. I have contacted the union and my attorney has reviewed the correspondence and that's all they paid me -- $3,000." - - Phyllis S. Answer -- If the trust fund has paid over to Phyllis all of the money contributed by employers, the fund's five- year rule may be legally effective. Perhaps her lawyer should insist that she receive interest on the $3,000 that was in the fund. The fund is certain to have in vested the payments made in behalf of its members and probably received income from those investments. While it may seem cruel that Phyllis, who expected to receive a pension from the Union fund, will not get one because of the five-year rule, it would seem that the fund does have a right to set a term for qualifying beneficiaries. Phyllis should ask the fund to pay interest on the $3,000. SHOE EXCHANGE "Dear Mr. Riblet. Although my program is in its infancy, I have had a gratifying number of responses to the article that appeared on the shoe ex change to amputees. When you consider the number of possible combinations of lengths, widths, heel heights and color preference, it is clear that more amputees and others who need only one shoe are going to have a better chance of locating suitable matches of shoes through my free shoe ex change. I keep all names confidential with only the match receiving information sent to me. All mailings of shoes are made between the amputees and others whose shoes are matched. This is not a financial venture but a service to amputees. No small charge just yet. -- Mrs. Charles H. Berger, 360 West Clackamas Boulevard, Gladstone, Oregon, 97027. Question -- "My husband is 68 and retired for three years. He bought some land 16 years ago which he sold last July for $17,000. He wonders if he will have to pay the full amount of taxes on this sale." -- Mrs. Lyle B. Answer -- If Lyle held the land for 16 years, he is en titled to certain deductions; In order to know how to figure it, he should seek expert advice from a tax practitioner. Question -- "I am 70 years of age. I moved to California from Illinoigxls the will I made in Illinois valid and good in California? It was made in Illinois about four years ago." -- Leroy S. Answer -- It is valid in- sofar as federal laws are concerned. If Leroy wants to feel secure about validity, he should ask his lawyer or go to the local Legal Aid society. I shouldn't think he would have much to worry about. Question -- "I received my Medicare card three years ago after my huband passed away. After the Social Security number on my card is the letter 'D'. Other people in my group have the letter 'A' after the SS number and some have an *AB\ Just what do the different numbers indicate? I'm sure my 'D' means deceased or dependent. Should my card have a *B' on it besides the 'D'? " -- Gertrude K. Answer -- I would have to know the details of Ger- t r u d e ' s M e d i c a r e registration. Unless she's a remarried widow, she should not have a "D" but an "A" or a "B" after her card: If she takes the card to the Social Security office or telephones Medicare, either will, after asking the questions that will reveal her status, tell her quickly what the "D" stands for and whether or not it should be another letter.
