LABELS FOR EDUCATION Earlier in the school year the Johnsburg schools asked for help in collecting product labels so that they can participate in the Labels for Education program. For several years, the schools have taken advantage of the opportunity to receive free educational materials through this program. The list includes soups, bean products and tomato juice; also cocktail vegetable juice, gravies and pasta products. Families using any of these products are urged to take time to peel off the labels and send them to the school. WELCOME SON Lukas Matthew is the name given to the son of former residents, Rodney and Carol Ackerman. Little Lukas arrived Jan. 9, weighing 9 lbs., 10 oz. and claiming Bev and Chuck Ackerman for his paternal grandparents. CONDOLENCES Members of the parish express their sincere Safety Hints ooooooooooooc By Alan J. Dixon Secretary of State If you drive to work in ^morning and evening "rush hour" traffic, you may think that these bumper to bumper periods are the most dangerous times of the day for you to be operating a motor vehicle. But if you do, you're only half right. Statistics show that the peak times for fatal ac cidents are between 5 and 9 p.m. and 2 to 5 a.m., when drivers should be par ticularly alert and careful. Late afternoon and early evening rush hours are especially hazardous during dark winter months, for motorists and pedestrians alike. Rain, snow and sleet are added risks. The high fatality rate during early morning hours is caused primarily by drinking and sleepy drivers. Light traffic on streets and roads encourages unsafe These hours are 50 percent more dangerous during winter months. Morning rush hour traffic between 7 and 10 is not as perilous because drivers are more rested and visibility is better. (A copy of the Rules of the Road booklet will be sent to you upon request. That's So Two can live as cheap ly as one--if they both have good jobs. -Times, Marshalltown, la. County Has 643 State Employees PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1.1M0 The paychecks of State of Illinois employees pumped $1.6 billion back into the Illinois economy and tax base during 1979, Comp troller Roland W. Burris, has reported. McHenry county has 643 state employees with a total salary of $6,891,412. Comptroller Burris said that 159,960 people received state paychecks during the last calendar year and their s a l a r i e s t o t a l l e d $1,641,825,638.94. The comptroller commented: "Unfortunately, some people tend to look upon the State payroll as a drain of their tax dollars, when in fact these doltqrs g0 directly back into the state's economy for things like food, clothing and housing and ~ at the same time - these employees are performing a vast range of state services for the taxpaying public. "And, since state em ployees also pay taxes, that tax dollar is further recycled back into the state treasury from which state employees are paid in the first place, and for local taxes as well. So the state payroll is really a major factor in Illinois' economy and the tax base of' the state and a great many communities." While the regular state payroll normally ranges between 115,000 and 118,000 full-time employees, part- time workers such as those in state institutions, student workers in the universities, and seasonal workers in the many state agencies in creased the year's total to 159,960 employees and a payroll * total of $1,641,825,638.94. feb.l*hrttSu foRHSBY S fondly center* cLove 26% Off BrachV 1 Lb.
