Remembering When (with long time subscribers) ME. AND MRS. PHIL THENNES A farmer for 47 years, Phil Thennes remembered paying $.50 an acre for rent on the old Miller farm. He also noted the horse troughs that used to be in McHenry. "There was (me on Green street, where the Ben' Franklin store is now standing and another on Riverside drive," Thennes said. Also on Green street, Phil recalled the water wheel at Bishop's Mill on Boone creek and the International Harvester store where Gladstone's is standing. "I remember taking some cattle to a show in Chicago," Thennes said. "I had to sleep on the hay next to the cows," V ̂ Mrs. Thennes remembered moving out to McHenry some 99 years ago. She recalled that the house in which they live was built in 1907. "When I moved out here, the area was all wooded and the roads were all dirt," she said. The McHenry Plaindealer has been a part of the Thennes household since 1912, when he came to McHenry. Senior Walk-In Center ister For Dance Sue Malenius, Michael O'Connor, WXRD Disc Jockey, and Kerry Miller (standing in the rear) together with Suzanne Vallst and Jean Rodenkirch (front), invite the public to "Take That Extra Step for Easter Seals." The Thircl Annual Easter Seals-WXRD Dance-a-thon, which will begin its 24-hour excitement at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Woodstock high school, is drawing dancers from McHenry who have decided to "Take That Extra Step for Easter Seals." The Dance-a-thon offers local people an excellent opportunity to donate their time and talents to show they care about the handicapped of McHenry county. A total of 97 percent 0f the funds raised at the Dance-a-thon will be used at the Easter Seal Therapy center in Woodstock to provide a variety of services to disabled individuals of all age groups. Many dancers who participated last year are entering again this year because they found the event to be a fantastic, dynamic and worthwhile activity. Disc Jockey Michael Lavelle will host the event which will be broadcast live over WXRD. Prizes are being awarded to the top mohey raisers and in the event the Dartce-a- thon raises over $15,000 the top money raiser will win an all-expense trip to Hollywood to appear on the Easter Seal Telethon, March 22 and 23.
