In addition to defensive assignments. Athoff centered for all punts and extra points for the Winona Warriors. Despite a disappointing won-loss record in the Northern Inter-Collegiate Conference. Winona Head Coach Myron Smith was pleased with the progress of his young squad. "Many freshmen played key roles in our offensive and defensive units. Althoff. along with the other freshmen, gained tremendous amounts of experience this year. The progress of our players during the season was substantial and we are ex pecting to contend for the Conference title in the next several seasons. Something we would never know unless we got around the town. Reading about the egg coffee my favorite cook makes, Clara "Toots" Overton let me know she makes it the same way. As Georgie Gobel would say, "You can't hardly find that kind no more*'! "Toots" had her sidekick, Mary Ppwers, with her to verify the story of her pal's brew. Now, there's a pair of gals we like to meet. "Fox Hole Evo" is starting early to round up a bus load of fans to take in a White Sox game next summer. Any Cub fan who joins the group will travel at his own risk. My hair is still standing up straight since three days ago when a driver swerved into my lane on Green St. and missed me my a whisker. Don't know if the guy was drunk, dazed or delirious. Had occasion to read an old Atetrac^ of Title dating back /before the Civil War. We think interest rates are high today, but the loan sharks back in those days charged as high as ten per cent. --And administrators fees knocked the sale price for a loop. Josie Glosson had some things to say as he was amused to see me sitting between Steve Trout and Bruce Sutter at the John- sburg baseball dinner. He had such a great time that he won't miss the event next year. Lest you forget. It will be Orange Night at West Campus on Friday of this week-when the crowd of the year is expected at the Warrior - Crown basketball game. On Saturday night, Feb. 9, some members of the Chicago Bears will be here. More about that next week. Most colleges send reports on athletes from our area and we use the items in ATHLETES AWAY. We have been asked about Don Bentz and Scott Dixon, those outstanding basketball players on the Johnsburg Skyhawk team last year. No reports have reached us so we inquired. Don Bentz was present at the baseball dinner last week and received the scholarship award from last year's dinner proceeds. A,very nice honor to a very fine young man. Don is a freshman at Rockford College where he is a starter at forward on the varsity team. You will remember Don's power under the boards last year. He was named on many "ALL" teams in the state. Scott shared "superstar" status with Don on the Skyhawks team. He was fast on his feet and was called the "court general". --And a real point maker. \ The mame Scott Dixon also appeared on many "ALL" teams. He is drawing a lot of notice in his fresh man year at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. If you have a son or daughter taking part in athletic programs in college don't be bashful about asking the athletic depart ment to send us information. We are interested in those young people. When a doctor says "This won't hurt", he means it won't hurt him. It had to be a slip of the tongue when the barker said, "The price was previously 90 dollars, now only $89.99". Another scare on inflation hits you when they advertise - "The price will never be lower". The Johnsburg Skyhawks host Beloit Catholic Friday. The sophomore game begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity game commencing at 7:30 p.m. Skyhawk coach Bob Kies has designated Friday as "Blue and Gold" day and has requested all Skyhawk fans to wear blue and gold clothes to the game. Look Forward to Mendota Coach Duane Sperry sported a large grin and seven young ladies smiled from ear to ear as the McHenry Tumbleweeds returned home from Har vard with a 1st, 2nd and two 3rd place medals, 4th and 6th place ribbons and a second place team trophy. In their first USTA in vitational appearance of the season Cindy Pemberton and Vicki Bruce finished 1 and 2 in intermediate girls (11 & 12), Lori Knaack and Cindy Kinsala 3rd and fourth (13 yrs. & up), Tracy Hud- jera, 6th (9 & 10), LaDonna Parvin, 3rd. in advanced girls' division (15 & up). Eriij Doherty finished 14th in novice girls' (9 & 10), however, this division has the greatest number of entrants, 22 at this meet, and only a few percentage points separated her from the top ten and we can look forward to some outstanding efforts from this girl. Having sent only 7 girls and bringing back these many awards is a con siderable achievement. Also, the Tumbleweeds have 11 other newer members who are about to join the competition team. A bright future indeed. Back to the present though, the Tumbleweeds are now hard at it again practicing for their next meet, and overnighter at Mendota February 9 and 10. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD r • • Warriors Meet Crown In "Eill The Gym" Orange Night At West Campus The Warriors of Ken Ludwig will host the Vikings of Crown in a Fox Valley league game here tonight. The game is designated as "Orange Night" and it is the wish of the Pep Club to see the gym filled with people in orange apparel. It has been eleven years since Buckner Gym was filled, and the Warriors responded to the occasion by defeating a fine Zion team by 11 points. We hope history can repeat itself tonight. It should be the game of the year. The Vikings of Jim Hinkle. an all junior outfit. started out slow, but have come on winning nine of their last eleven, and are bearing down on the league leaders. The Vjkes are led by Mr. Everything Gary Gliesman, the conference's outstanding player. Last season he was the Player of the Year, and it is a good bet that he will repeat again this season. He is a bonifide all state can didate, and truly one of the better players in this part of the state. He has plenty of help, with guard Kevin Kepp the fine guard who is averaging 8 assists and 10 pts. per game. Jim Leske, John Sczepanski and Doug Wismewski all are able to put the ball in the hoop. The Warriors are playing their best ball of the season. The defense has tightened, the teamwork of offense is outstanding, and knocking off the highly touted Hawks of Hoffman Estates last Saturday night has to have them ready for the Vikings tonight. So turn off the tube, and get out to West Campus to see high school basketball at its best. You won't be sorry, and you may want to come back for more. Johnsburg Girls Defeat Hononegah Five 42-31 The Johnsburg girls' varsity basketball squad improved its conference record to 4-1 with a romping 42-31 victory over the Hononegah Indians last Tuesday on the Johnsburg home court. The victory puts the girls in second place in the Shark Conference, a half game behind South Beloit. The girls were led by Sue Dehn in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 19-9 lead. Dehn had six points in the first quarter, and Lora Jacobs added five to the Skyhawk score. Johnsburg managed only two baskets in the second quarter, and the team went to the locker room at half- time with a 23-13 lead. Hie Skyhawk defense took over in the third quarter and allowed only four points while collecting 12 for themselves. At the end of the third period, the Skyhawks led by a 2-1 margin, 35-17. Johnsburg gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter, but still managed to win easily 42-31.-- The top scorers for the Skyhawks were Sue Dehn with 11, and Lora Jacobs with 9 points. Inge Dschida and Ellen O'Malley scored six each, and Sally Oeffling and Brenda Bingman each scored four. The Skyhawks also trounced the North Boone Vikings earlier in the week, 68-26. The girls had a game scheduled at Marengo Thursday, and they play again at Beloit Catholic next Thursday, Feb. 7.
