The field general Lenny Jensen, although not having a good night from the shooting aspect, never theless his leadership kept ^ne Warriors in the game throughout the evening. Anyway you look at it, it was high school basketball at its best. It will be a long time before the fans see another one like it, and just to show you how well the teams played in the first half, the Warriors had 2 turnovers to the Vikings 1. That is good basketball in anybody's league. Friday it is down the pike to Crystal Lake South and Gary Collins crew. The Gators are still smarting from their loss to cross town rival the Tigers, so the Warriors had better be prepared for another tough game. McHenry vs. Crown play of both teams during the initial half of basketball. In the opening seconds of the third period Bob Zeller's two quick baskets, one on a solo layup, the other on a great assist from Bob Greve gave the Warriors the lead for the first time 43 to 42. After Kepp hit a 15 footer for the Vikes, Sroka and Jensen both scored for the Warriors to give them a 5 pt. margin 49 to 44, for their biggest lead, and Warrior fans were going wild in the stands. Then both teams cooled off a bit, partly due to the fine defense that was displayed, but with Sroka, Johnson and Greve all scoring, the Warriors maintained their five point margin at the end of the period 55 to 50. Gliesman opened the final period with a layup, then Anderson of the Warriors hit a 10 footer. The Vikings came roaring back to tie the game at 59 with 6:00 remaining on the clock. Sroka and Greve's charity tosses gave the Warriors back the lead, but again Kepp and Gliesman tied it up for the Vikings. With 4:45 remaining the Vikings pulled a surprise press, that baffled the Warriors, and turned two miscues into key baskets. These two quick baskets were the turning point of the game, as the Warriors never did regain the lead. Zeller brought the Warriors to within 2, but Leske returned the favor for the Vikes. Crystal Lake Central Sluppick SPORTS EDITOR' The ranks are thinning. Our friend and high school classmate, Floyd Foss, was called from this earth last week. Floyd resided in Ringwood and boarded the train each day to come to McHenry High. He never spoke ill of anybody and everybody had a good word for him throughout his lifetime. In recent years, "Red" Winkel and I toured up to Richmond several times to join our old classmate for lunch. There were many laughs about remembrances of school days. The world hasn't produced many men to equal Floyd Foss, nor will his fine character be exceeded in heaven. Looking over the list makes me realize more than ever that the ranks are really thinning. I think Bertha Schiessle, Alice Miller, Ed Kennebeck and myself are the only ones still living. The last of the Mohicans They didn't fill the gym Friday night, but the largest cjowd of the season turned out for "Orange Night". It was the first time the upper deck was opened this season. The Warriors lost a rip- snortin' basketball game 80 to 79, but lost nothing in the admiring eyes of their fans. "Mac" McCracken, who has played, coached and witnessed more games than any of us, claimed you wouldn't see a better game or better shooting in a state tournament. Neither team deserved to lose; Jim Johnson gave a stellar performance under the boards and led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points. If you didn't see the game, or even if you did, read Dick Rabbitt's report on the action. It is one of his best coverages. Bob Adams reports that we have two enthusiastic readers in Elgin, his aunts, Margaret and Clara'bel Adams. Hustzl Parrish Bacon Moline In our high school class of 1923, there were six boys and six girls graduated from what is now Landmark School. The girls were Bertha Schiessle. Alice Miller, Doris Bacon, Pauline Freund, Harriett Bobb and Greta Chamberlain.' Boys in the graduating class were Floyd Foss, Ed Kennebeck, Herman Nye, Leo Winkel, John Vycital and Earl Walsh. Coach Pat Wirtz's McHenry sophomore cagers dropped a game last Friday night to Crown, 48 to 45. The Warriors led by five at the intermission, and also held a 41 tQ 36 margin going into the final period. However, a Crown rally ended all hopes for a victory for the young Warriors. John Huff led the Warriors with 10 points. Totals The game was delayed at the start when over- enthusiastic followers threw torn up paper on the floor at both ends of the gym. No damage was done, but the mess had to be cleared to avoid injury to players. Bob Zeller, who plays the game for all he has in him, got into foul trouble that hurt. Not only his reboun ding, but his improved scoring is needed for the Warriors to win.
