On Thursday the Warriors wrestled Belvidere on their home mat and gained a 30-27 non-conference win. On the road at Dundee Friday, the local matmen finished their conference season with a winning 32-27 score. Coach Sobczak's team closes this season with a 8-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference record. In spite of forfeiting from one to three weight classes most matches, this is still a better record than they have had for at least six years. As with many of their matches this year, the local wrestlers picked up most of their points last weekend in the middle weights. Double winners for the Warriors were Kevin Hollian, Brian Wrona, Vic Betancourt, Dave Ramer, Mark Betancourt and Ed Hughes. Kevin Hollian, an up-and- coming sophomore, pinned his Belvidere opponent in 1:28 and took an 18-4 superior decision from Nelson of Dundee. Brian Wrona, who wrestles, at either 119 pounds or 126 pounds, won both his matches by decisions. With a 5-2 conference record and a 24-5 overall record for this season, this junior should be one of McHenry's top wrestlers again next year. Another junior Vic Betancourt, raised ' his conference record to 3-4 and his season record to 15-7 with his weekend wins. Betan­ court pinned his Belvidere man in 1:23 and wrestled to a 5-2 decision over Daly of Dundee. A consistantly strong wrestler at 145 pounds this season has been senior Dave Ramer. He won a 2-0 decision against Belvidere and gained a fall in 3:23 at Dundee to up his conference record to 4-2-1 and his overall record to 17-7-2. Like his brother, senior Mark Betancourt used his I wo wins last week to bring up his conference record to 5-1 and his overall record to 15-5-1. Betancourt used two near falls to pile up a 12-7 victory against Belvidere and decisioned his Dundee man on Friday, 9-6. Another senior Ed Hughes, was given a forfeit win and a 2:32 fall to raise his records last weekend. Hughes now stands 6-0 in the conference and 20-2 for the season, with ten falls to credit. Also winning single matches last week were sophomore Mike Connors and Scott Schmidt. Connors helped his team with ai 6-3 decision in the 132 weight class against Belvidere. A first period pin in 1:57 by 5SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Sports Calendar Schmidt against his Dundee opponent earned six points for his team. With so many good in­ dividual records, McHenry should have at least four or five high seeds for the Fox Valley Conference tour­ nament this Friday and Saturday. The tourney starts Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Crystal Lake Central with the preliminary rounds. Semi-finals are Saturday at 1 p.m. with the finals getting underway at 6:30 p.m. A strong crowd of Warrior fans at Crystal Lake are needed to help cheer on all the McHenry winners we are expecting. The Warriors trailed throughout the opening half, but a few words of wisdom by Coach Gary Gray, set the Warriors on the war path in the third period. With good execution of passing and shooting, the Warriors ran up 24 pts. to the Eagles 15 and led 41 to 38 going into the final period. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD On February 9 and 10 the Northern Illinois Con­ servation club and its associate the 885 Civic club will hold their annual Ice Fishing Derby on Channel Lake. This popular event has, in previous years, drawn up­ wards of 8,000 persons to fish, observe and otherwise participate in the two day schedule of lively fishing competition, childrens games and fun on the ice. This year a special event has been planned for the first Annual Winter Soft Ball Tournament. Hourly prizes will be given for fish catches and contests will determine winners in sack races, three legged race, ice augering and egg throwing competition every 30 minutes. Very young children will scramble in straw for 2,000 pennies, plus nickels, dimes and quarters. Many prizes await area ice fishermen!! This years schedule in­ cludes major prizes with grand prize being a $1,000 and $500 savings bond. Fishermen and others who are just naturally lucky will win prizes for catching the largest northern Dike , walleye pike, striped bass, black bass, bluegills, sun fish, crappies, and bullheads. The largest fish of each species caught each hour will be awarded a prize as well as the largest each day. In addition the largest fish caught both days will bring home a prize.
