"We're ready", said Postmaster LeRoy Smith, whose memory of a suc cessful Christmas mailing season still is fresh., Industry sources estimate that nearly 200 million Valentines will be mailed nationwide, second only to Christmas and New Year seasonal greetings. And school teachers, not sweethearts, will receive the most Valentines, according to greeting card makers. Postmaster Smith said the major objective of National Letter Writing week is to focus public attention on the power of the written word in shaping opinions, lifting spirits, and preserving memories. For Valentine's day, Postmaster Smith suggested that McHenry residents mail their cards and packages in plenty of time for delivering before the holiday. He also reminded mailers to make sure they have full and correct addresses, including zip code anc^return address, and to include to and from addresses inside parcels as well as outside. V Those who wait until the last mintue can use express mail which guarantees overnight delivery in more than 1,000 cities across the country. Local PTA units will be conducting a series of discussion groups, u t i l i z i n g m a t e r i a l s developed by the Illinois PTA and made possible through grants received from Country Companies Insurance and the Metropolitan Chicago Chapter of the National Foundation-March of Dimes. Topics such as finance, drug abuse including alcohol misuse and tobacco, van dalism and violence, parenting concerns in cluding day care and problems of single parents will be touched upon in discussion. Since the PTA is con cerned about the well being of all children, it offers the packets of material to any organization or groups which are also concerned about children and youth, free of charge, upon request. The materials include a soundsheet with discussion guides from Illinois PTA chairmen and a com mentary from Dr. Effie Ellis, Quality of Life con sultant. To receive a packet, contact Meryl Perlstrom, director of PTA District 26, at 587-5415. Statewide response in formation will be gathered by the Illinois FTA and transmitted to the Planning committee of the Illinois- White House Conference on Children which is scheduled to be held in November of 1980. Feedback sheets are included in each packet and each group sponsoring meetings and using the materials is requested to send the responses to the person indicated on the sheet. Outline Crib Dangers When the song "Good Morning to You" was pub lished in 1893, it gained no popularity. But a two-word change turned it into one of the most-sung songs in the world. You know it as "Happy Birthday to You." • * •-* Perhaps the all-time favorite song, as far as sales are concerned, is "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin. At last count, it had a sheet-music sale of about four million. Its recording sales have already gone over the 100 million mark. Alarmed that parents may be exposing their infants to the possibility of strangulation through the continued use of two dangerous types of baby cribs, William L. Kem piners, acting director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, today urged Illinois consumers to participate in a nationwide effort to eliminate the hazard. Kempiners said that, according to the United States Consumer Product- Safety Commission (CP- SC),the cribs involved are manufactured by Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc., of Bassett, Va. These cribs are available in Illinois at most retail outlets where baby furniture is sold. The Bassett cribs which require modification to eliminate the strangulation hazard are the "Mandalay" and "Candlelite" styles. The design of these styles makes it possible for infants standing in their cribs to trap their heads between a corner post and the head board or footboard, and strangle. Six reports of such deaths have been reported to CPSC since September, 1977. None of these deaths occurred in Illinois. The "Mandalay" cribs were produced with a bamboo-like motif, and include models 5126-505 and *5621-505 (painted yellow) and 5225-505 (painted whiter The model numbers can be found on an adhesive label affixed to the inside of the headboard below the mat tress level. The cribs were m a n u f a c t u r e d f r o m February, 1974, through October. 1976, and sold for approximately $100 to $125 in retail stores nationwide. Parents should remove all four finials (the decorative knobs on top of each cor- nerposUby unscrewing them. Consumers then should report that they have removed the finials by contacting the retailer from which the crib was pur chased or the nearest B a s s e t t c r i b - d e a l e r . R e p o r t i n g t h e modification will help Bassett and CPSC maintain an accurate record of the number of cribs repaired. Bassett crib dealers can be found by checking the "Yellow Pages" section of the telephony directory under the listing "Furniture- Children's," or by placing a collect ^ call to Bassett at (703 ) 629-7511, extension 340. In May, 1978, CPSC and Bassett announced a v o l u n t a r y p r o g r a m r t o modify the cribs. Since then, only 1,000 of the "Mandalay" cribs have been reported modified. "This is less than 20 percent of the estimated 5,000 "Mandalay" cribs produced," Kempiners said. Approximately 1,200 of the 1,654 "Candlelite" cribs have been repaired, ac cording to the Bassett company Bassett has agreed to produce thousands of large wall pouters warning parents of ihe hazard, and to have the posters distributed 10 pediatricians throughout the United States for display in physicians' waiting rooms. • ••• t%0 wilt be a good year for those who strive to move forward. f j
