Kathleen Brown remembers well the summer parades which were led by Gib Howard, riding a horse that walked sideways. For wiling away the summer hours, Kathleen recalled some of the times Spent at Clarence Niesen's dance pavilion and John Knox's roller rink. The rbller rink was on the second floor of the building that now houses Riverside Retail Outlet. The first floor of the building was a garage and automobile dealership - the birth of Buss FOrd. Kathleen's roots in the McHenry area date back to 1836 when her great grandfather, John Flusky, came to McHenry from Ireland. "He maintained that he started the first ferry across the Fox," she said. "This has been disputed, but he, most likely, had a hand in it." Sunday afternoons in her youth were particularly memorable because they featured football games between the 'Irishers' and the 'Johnsburgers'. Later in the afternoon everyone would gather at the railroad depot to watch the Williams Bay-Chicago flyer go roaring through. The McHenry Plaindealer has been a part of her family for many years and she said, "I can remember when the Plaindealer was across the street from the post office. My grandfather would give me a nickel and say 'Run up town and get the Plaindealer - and bring back the change.'
