Past 65 LEARNING ALL ABOUT POKER byCarl Riblet Jr. Q.-"I went with my hus band to a Golden Age poker party, I lost $6 on a big pot where I shot the works on what I just knew was the winning hand. It was draw poker and my hand was four kings and a seven. But I didn't win. A man there had what he called a low straight flush and he took all the money. I said I would write and you would tell me the truth that my hand was the best no matter what they said. My husband just laughed." Mamie W. A. -- Mamie didn't learn the first thing about poker, which is -- what beats which. To go less than fully instructed into a poker game, even among Golden Age friends, is something like walking on ice in wooden shoes ~ when you start, to slide, you're done for. No wonder Mamie's husband * laughed, although it was downright unkind of him. A straight flush does beat anything but a better straight flush. Better luck next time for Mamie. I hope she gets a royal flush in spades. Q - "I am 46 and in good health but I can't find a job. It is discrimination because of my age- Employers either want the very young or else they only want to pay minimum wages. What can I do?" - John B. A. -- Keep on looking. While those of us past 65 have understanding and compassion for others who are less fortunate, I know of no senior who wouldn't trade places with John if he could. I would be willing to be out of a job and discriminated against if only I could be young and 46 again. As George Bernard Shaw said: "The trouble with youth is that it's wasted on young people." Q. -- "My aging father ~ he is 79 -- was cheated by a man who telephoned him from New York and per suaded him to switch some valuabte'bonds for some that were worthless. I think it is sad that Americans try to take advantage of the elderly in Canada." -- Dorothy D. A. -- I do, too. However, when you think of the bucket shop operators in New York who prey by telephone on aging Canadians, think of the bucket shop operators in Toronto who prey by telephone on aging Americans. No country has a monopoly on crooks. Q. -- "Must I pay tax on my Social Security bank account and all other income from stocks and dividends? - -- Andrew J.K. A. -- Not on your SS checks, but absolutely on all other income. Age does not protect us from taxes due on money we earn -- either from savings and in vestments, or from salaries. Q.--"When I was a kid way back in 1915 I went to a music hall show with my parents. The singer sang a catchy song that had a title something like 1 Have a Castle On the River Nile.'- Have you any idea at all Security American Family's Special Homeowners Package Policy. The tune is still in my head after 60 years but the words are not". -- Diocelli M. A. ™ Diocelli is no doubt humming the tune of a song published in New York. It goes like this: "I got a castle on the River Nile. I'm gonna live in elegant style With baboon butlers at my door and diamonds on the floor. I'm gonna marry Princess Kalamazoo; turn my blood from a red to a blue, With entertainment all the while -- In my castle on the river, and my river on the castle, in my castle on ,the River Nile. U Q. -- "I'm 66, my wife is 69. We have Medicare A and B and Blue Shield and Blue Cross. I took out another policy with a private com pany that costs us $24 a month. Do you think we are over-covered? We spend $80 to $100 a month for drugs and Blue Cross said we aren't covered for prescription drugs. Is it possible for us to get prescription drug coverage any place?" -- C.R.W. A. -- I wouldn't dare say C;R. is either adequately covered or over-covered. Who knows what the future will bring? I am 72 and have only Medicare. Insurance cannot protect us against every eventuality. There are / many companies that offer prescription drug insurance. Blue Cross has it and so do many, if not all, of the group insurance contracts. Some prescription drug policies are as much as $100 deductible. Some limit the number of pills, or capsules, per prescription. C.R. and his wife should shop around. Phone the various insurance companies, including Blue Cross, and get some details. Then make up their minds. Some readers wonder about these three things: How to get officialdom to correct a mistake in a birth certificate, how to get a certificate whten there ap parently is no record of a birth, and how to apply for government benefits with a birth certificate that is in error. Correction in a birth record should be made by the city, county, state or provincial office that made the mistake in the first place. That government's vital statistics bureau should be able to ascertain that the applicant was indeed born. • * * * Judging others often prevents us from apprais ing ourselves. A Space-Age Health Aid If you happen to be driving through the country and see someone wearing a strange looking headgear, don't jump to any conclusions. Some farmers with eye and respiratory problems are donning air-purifier helmets when they work around dust and grain chaff. A motorized fan inside the helmet draws contaminated air through a double filtration system in the shell and pushes clean air down over the face. The fan is powered by a rechargeable battery pack worn on the belt. Lung Unit Member Meeting SECTION!.- PAGE 1 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY IS, II Members of the DuPage- McHenry Lung association are invited to a membership meeting to be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Room 103 of the DuPage county courthouse, Reber street near S. Main street, Wheaton. Henry B. Harper, Crystal Lake, association first vice- president, said the purpose of the meeting is to consider a revision of the constitution and'1 by-laws which will permit a change of name to American Lung association of DuPage and McHenry Counties. Harper said that over half the local lung associations in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have already made such a change. A lung association member, he said, is one who has con tributed a minimum of $3 to the Christmas Seal cham paign. The agenda will include a discussion of plans for resuming monthly breathing clubs, the summer camp for asthmatic children, and other patient services. A report on the Christmas Seal campaign which provides sole support for the lung association, and which is running 5 percent ahead of last year, will be given, and committee appointments will be made. Goodwill Visits City On Friday, Feb. 22, the Goodwill Industries truck is scheduled to be in McHenry to collect clothing, shoes, small housewares, toys and small appliances for the deserving disabled, ac cording to Mrs. Nick (Agnes) Adams, 1007 N. Plymouth lane, ' local representative. For pickup service or information about the Goodwill program, call Mrs. Adams. All items should be marked for Goodwill In dustries. The trucks are easily indentified by the markings and the drivers are in uniform. They will issue an on-the-spot printed receipt for the goods received. Abilities Center Goodwill Industries is a working and learning agency for the handicapped in this area. The contributed articles are used for rehabilitation and training and when renewed, the items are sold and the money is used to pay the wages of the disabled workers. It is a not-for-profit agency and serves all creeds, colors and nationalities. \W\\\W* "Pop, I got a girl in trouble. tylond&tjahe STATE BANK Weather Information 344-3100 The f i rs t bank in McHenry County to pay h igh marke t in te res t ra tes to th e smal l saver .
