/ PAGE 10 - PLA1NPEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 20,1980 Past 65 She's No Journeyman Carpenter By Carl Riblet, Jr. Question -- "I must comment on your response in your column to the 71- year-old widow who wanted to put up a towel rack in her bathroom, an experience I have gone through. Unless she is a journeyman car penter, she is never going to find a stud in her wall by thumping." -- Mrs. D.E.H. Answer -- Mrs. D.E.H. must have solid walls in her house. When I read her letter I went to a wall in my office and did some thumping. I discovered that a stud thumps solid, and the wall space, in between two studs thumps hollow. Perhaps a woman doesn't hear thumps in the same way as a man does. A thump is either a hard thump or a hollow thump. Any lady should be able to locate a stud in a normal, air-space wall -- by thumping. The way to thump is to half stiffeqthe first two fingers of the right hand and then go thump, thump, thump with the ends of the fingers until a thump sounds solid. It's all a matter of thumping and hearing correctly at one and the same time. Question - "There was a meeting held in our oldest high school auditorium by the Council for Aging for a lecture on the problems of aging. Hardly anybody came. Only about 15 people. I think that's strange. What do you think the reason is for the low attendance? -- Walter A. Answer -- It might be that the meeting was held in the wrong place. Thoughts of an auditorium in an old high school make people an ticipate that a lecture there would be an echo of speeches that nobody ever listened to. Small meetings of interest to the aging should be held in interesting places, such as a restaurant's banquet room or places recommended by the ..Chamber of Commerce Speaker's bureau. The Council on Aging in Walter's town ought to have its knuckles wrapped. Question -- "The other night, my husband and I, who are past 70, went to see that movie 'Going in Style' in which George Burns, age 84, does a terrific job of acting. Most of the people in the movie house were young and they were tickled to death and laughed in appreciation of the movie. It must be that young people have more appreciation for older people than we thought. On the other hand, the Bert Parks battle over the 'Miss America Beauty Contest' master of ceremonies job tells another story. The promotors want to kick Parks off the program because he is 65. Maybe they should ask the beauty queens. The girls may want Mr. Parks as master of ceremonies. Anyhow, they shouldn't kick him out because he is 65" - Barbara P Answer -- George Burns and Art Carney and the others are indeed in a good movie, an entertaining movie, that's the key -- entertainment! Word got around and the young people wanted to see it because the movie had promises of top entertainment. Yes, the girls who are entrants in the "Miss America Beauty Contest" should have something to say about Bert Parks. But -- no matter what his age, if the? promotors and the con testants don't want him, that's it! they won't have him. ? Question -- "The lawyers advised me that the Iowa State Bar association has fixed costs for a lawyer's services in guiding a will through probate at 2 percent of the gross estate. Is price fixing by lawyers legal? -- Delos D. Answer -- I think so, becuase it is a minimum charge. The best way to find out for certain, however, is for Delos to ask his lawyer or to write a letter to the Bar association for an answer to Lakemoor-Lilymoor Margaret Karas Area 385-4934 A Privilege Those who are not registered, but want to participate in the November general election, may register after March 19. Registrations will be accepted to the date of the elections for the April 8 voting for the McHenry Nunda Library Board of Trustees. After 1980, elections held in the state of Illinois will be consolidated. They will then be held on the same dates, saving the taxpayers duplicate election costs, and the voters time spent at the polls. the question. Of course, Delos should be realistic and expect the Bar association to be very careful to give good reasons why the charge is legal. Nobody can win in a question match with a bar association group. LLCCI MEETING Wednesday, Feb. 20, is the date of the monthly meeting of Lily Lake Conservation Club, Inc. The purpose of the club is the rejuvenation and preservation of Lily Lake. Jackie (Marlene) and Carl Stromley celebrate their wedding anniversary Feb. 26. Anyone wishing to have a good neighbor should live next door to Carl. We know, because we do. SKIING Moraine Hills State Park, within walking distance to most of our area, is being enjoyed by many cross country skiers.---- Betty and Bill Kmetz were among those who went out for a brisk afternoon of exercise. Betty did fine until she took a spill, which is not very good for one's dignity. Sons, Mike and John, couldn't join Betty and Bill, due to the flu. Anthony Gurske went skiing with a group from school, and came home with all bones, etc., intact. Congratulations, Anthony. SYMPATHY Fred C. Gardner, father of Anne Micheletto, died suddenly Feb. 10. Robert, Christopher and Therese, Anne and Bob s children. Sympathy is ex tended to our neighbors. TOWNSHIP The Nunda Township Revenue Sharing hearing Thursday Feb. 14, was at tended by Margaret Karas, representing the non-profit Lily Lake Conservation Club, Inc., and the McHenry Nunda Library District, as substitute for Board s President, Louise Hipwell, who was ill. It is always interesting to see the workings of our government first-hand. It is good to be able to take problems to a governing body and have a courteous and competent response. CUPID Parkland school had its own "CupiJ" on Valentine's day. Suzy Wipper, dressed in white tights, red shorts, striped top and red cap, complete with bow and arrow, darted through the halls last Thursday, pasting hearts on favored students. A person on TV's "Real People" show played Cupid, but he is not as pretty and inventive as our Suzy!
