The recent concert by the New Oratorio Singers at Johnsburg's St. John the Baptist church played to a standing room only audience. It was difficult to determine whether the star of the concert was the highly trainfed choral group under Thomas Wikman's direction, the superbly professional orchestra, or the newly restored, magnificent church. Durufle's Requiem and works by Vaughn Williams were performed at the concert. These works were rendered with an excitement and intensity that has probably never been equalled in McHenry county and probably surpasses stahdards of performance in any urban area. The New Oratorio Singers is a newly formed choral group in McHenry county. Its organizational nucleus is the Woodstock Fine Arts Chorale, a small choral group which performed largely in Woodstock. The new group is com posed of approximately 75 singers who displayed, at the concert, the type of collective vocal talent that is usually found only in professional groups. This professionality can be at tributed to the group's director, Thomas Wikman. Wikman is also the director of the Music of the Baroque, a Chicago based choral group. Wikman, and the Music of the Baroque, have performed at the White House, Ravinia and various other places in the Chicago area. An orchestra of 52 ac companied the choral group. Approximately half of the instrumentalists were from the Chicago Symphony and the balance were highly proficient professional musicians. Of the orchestra, seven are principal players with the Chicago Symphony. The skill of the orchestra and the skill of Wikman's direction were evident throughout the concert in the fine balance between the orchestra and singers and the subtleties of the tonal dynamics. The blend of th$ liturgical music and the setting of the Johnsburg St. John the Baptist church made the performance an emotionally moving experience. The church, through sacrificial donations of its membership , during the past several years, has been restored to s its orginial 1900 grandeur. From the exterior it is an imposing edifice on the landscape^o(the Johnsburg- Fox River Valley. The in terior, with a seating capacity of approximately 800, the color scheme, woodwork and magnificent stained glass have all been returned to their former, turn of the century gran deur. The vocal soloists for the concert, each of whom deserved special recognition for substantially adding to the highly professional quality of the performance, were: Doris Quick. Jan " Jar vis, Holly Emrich,Robert Durnbaugh and Peter Carroll. Address Inside Parcel Is Delivery 'Insurance' COAL CONVERSION Gov. James R. Thompson announced the appointment of a Task Force on Energy Conservation and Coal Conversion at state-owned facilities. "My budget in March will propose the means for us to get these conversions under way through up-front capital investment that will ultimately be repaid by future savings in energy costs and in the en couragement of others to look first to Illinois coal," said Thompson. The governor has asked the task force to complete its review and recommend a program, including legislative proposals if necessary, to him by Aug. 1, 1980. The experienced parcel mailer knows that including full to and from address inside as well as outside the package is good insurance for delivery, Postmaster Leroy Smith said this week. , "An address label sometimes drops off or becomes illegible, and when there is no return address or similar identification inside, there is little chance of delivery. However, postal employees try to identify the addressee or mailer, sometimes from tiny clues", he said. Such an effort resulted in the recent delivery of a package mailed from an Illinois community. Smith said the address label had come off, and since there was no external return address, the parcel went to a dead letter office. There, the package was opened and a gift card was found reading only, "To Linda, from Mother and Daddy Grimes". The dead letter office returned the package to the town from where it was mailed. A post office clerk began INMATE RELEASES Illinois Department of Corrections Director Gayle M. Franzen announced the release of 287 inmates from state prisons and 41 from community correctional centers. They are the second group of inmates to be released as a result of a recent Illinois Supreme Court decision which requires the Department to recalculate the time to be served on sentences of certain inmates. This brings the total number of inmates discharged to 474. The early release of other prisoners is expected. telephoning people named Grimes in the local phone directory. He soon made contact with the senders and the gift was again on its way to its Texas destination. "A happy ending", Postmaster Smith said, "But had the full addresses been included inside the package in the first place, a lot of time and anxiety could have been saved."
