"MY KIND A TOWN" "Editor: "Happy Birthday , Wonder Lake...^ "Fifty years' ago, on Feb. 22, 1930, for the first time, water spilled over your dam and Wonder Lake became a reality. "From a pastureland, to a summer resort area, to a c o m m u n i t y s e r v i n g thousands of full time residents, you grew. "On a hot and sultry summer day, your waters give the pleasure of a refreshing swim. Sailboats dot your^ surface as their occupants relax from the pressures of the day. A young boy rejoices over the fish he has pulled from your depths. Water skiers playfully bounce over your waves. "The harsh cold of winter is softened by the glad voices of children skating on your thick ice. Ice boats skim swiftly by, while snowmobilers find your miles of surface a recreational delight. "Your waters have been well used. RENT RINSETFVAC the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning system First Hour of Rental $1.00 per hour . . . for every hour thereafter. RTE. 120. McHENRY, ILL. "The people who have gathered on your shores, who live the days of their lives in your community could be considered a cross roads of America. You have formed your own melting pot of humanity. "Your people include the young couples working, struggling, laughing, and crying - raising up their families. There are the middle aged, breathing a bittersweet sigh of relief and remorse as the youngest of their chicks walks out the door to begin life on his own. There are the elderly - many of the Social Security crowd who carefully manage on their limited income and yet enrich their golden years by being "young at heart". There are the children whose enthusiastic banter rings from your waters to your picnic grounds to your baseball fields to your sledding hills. "Your neighborhoods are not snobbish. Your people are, for the most part - warm, sensitive and helpful to each other. Your small businesses offer a 'home town' type friendliness. "You have been called "Little Chicago" and there is some truth in this. Most of your population has migrated from the noisy, bustling windy city to settle on your peacful shores. With them, they bring the qualities and traditions of their culture. Some bring their tendency towards crime and this portion of humanity creates an in creasing problem for all of your citizens. "You harbor no panacea for the problems of your area. You harbor human beings - with all of their goodness and all of their faults. MCHENRY HEARING AID SUBHEnUB ALL MAKES * LOW PRICES! While your residential growth has been almost -unlimited, your dependency has grown in other areas. Industry is almost unknown to you. Harrison school is the only Wonder Lake school, ser vicing a section of your kindergarten through eighth grade students. Your children attending at least seven other area schools. Your residents look to McHenry, Woodstock and Crystal Lake for major shopping, newspapers, libraries, hospital care and more. Most of your people leave your lake to find employment. "Incorporation is perhaps your most controversial topic. Only a small nucleus in Wonder Lake called Sunrise Ridge is an in corporated village. For the rest of your east side and your west side, a bitter battle has been Waged through the years. Some who would incorporate, who see the value and advantages of this unifying process, have fought in vain. Those who wish to remain free, in dependent and unshackled by the inevitable challenges and problems that in corporation would bring, have made you the largest . unincorporated area in Illinois. r,We pause by your waters on this occasion, your fiftieth birthday, to give you recognition. Much has been accomplished and your future holds unlimited potential. How your future will be shaped and by whom - we do not know ... "But for now, we say... Happy Birthday, Wonder- Lake... you're my kinda town. "Mary Jean Huff "3104 Eastwood Drive "Wonder Lake" $200 Scholarship For Secretarial Career The Fox Valley chapter, the National Secretaries association (International) announces the establishment of a scholarship in the amount of $200 to aid students planning to pursue a career in secretarial science at McHenry County college. This scholarship is open to all students entering MCC in the fall, 1980 semester, those students returning to MCC for part-time or evening courses, or any student who is presently enrolled at MCC in the secretarial science department. Financial needs of the student will be taken into consideration. NSA has been established to promote professionalism, understanding of the business world and en courages secretaries to grow through education. It en courages these goals in those students pursuing a secretarial career by the awarding of this scholarship. Applications can be ob tained from the secretarial science department of MCC in March. Details on this will follow later. The selection will be made in May with the scholarship presented at the June NSA dinner meeting. For more information, call Virginia Kleinfelter, 459-5000 or contact the Secretarial Science department at McHenry County college. , Slate Seminar For Non-Profit Groups A seminar designed to help directors of non-profit organizations in identifying federal funding and proposal writing will be held at McHenry County college Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dr. Lynn Willett from Elgin Community college will instruct the participants in methods of getting grant money for their agency and give basic, concrete steps to take when searching out and applying for grants. Topics to be covered in clude grant writing techniques, sources of funding, developing a resource development strategy and grants ad ministration. The cost includes lunch and an extensive array of resource materials for each participant. Registration can be made by calling McHenry County college. Folk Program Offered Free At MCC March 4 "Rye Whiskey and Wry" an evening of Southern Appalachian folk tales, music and dance will be presented at McHenry County college Tuesday, March 4. The free performance by The Company a freshman touring ensemble from the Northwestern university School of Speech Depart ment of Interpretation, is sponsored by MCC's Speech department and the college's Student Life committee. The one-hour show will begin at 8 p.m. in the College Union. It will include banjo and guitar accompaniment, singing, square dancing, bird calls, riddles, games and folk wisdom. The program will feature the trickster hero who triumphs over such ad versaries as a giant and an old fire dragaman, a lusty re-telling of Chaucer's Miller's Tale, and "Like Meat Loves Salt," a version of the folk tale that ShakesDeare transformed into King Lear. Cheryl Oxford, a Nor t h w e s t e r n g r a d u a t e assistant, directs the 19 performers in The Company. Local residents are invited to attend the free per formance. For additional information call the college. In the forefront of nations that are offering homes, jobs and education to these refugees is Argentina. An estimated 5,000 refugees will be arriving in Argentina, and the people of that coun try are finding them the jobs and the - homes they need.
