& HKUMNG I'AWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 •(815) 459-2641 Many cats and dogs, tome pedigree, tome the 'All American' type, are available for adoption at the Animal Control Center in Woodstock. Give one of their many temporary boarders a chance at life. They wait for your call as long as they can hat sometimes there is just too little room. Call815-338-70M. Photo Credit: Don Kaiser By Carla Bennett Helping Paws has been deluged with complaints regarding the article ap pearing last week in a county newspaper concerning the release program of the Wildlife Rehabilitation committee. A statement at the end of the article in dicated that, after all the tender loving care given shot, trapped and orphaned animals and birds by the committee, they were released into an unprotected area again, for the benefit of trappers and hunters. Helping Paws called Ken Fiske, executive director of the McHenry County Con servation District, and he clarified the matter. The healed, rehabilitated animals and birds are released into refuges where hunting and trappping are banned, and where there is food available while they are becoming independent foragers. Eventually these animals will reproduce. There is no „ way to prevent some, especially ducks and pheasants, from straying from the refuge as time goes on, and some of these may, indeed, fall prey to trappers and hunters. Incidentally, some states have already banned the barbaric leghold trap. Unfortunately, Illinois is not one of them. HP urges everyone (and women are obviously the greatest of fenders) not to buy fur coats. Every fur collar purchased sets another trap, as surely as if the buyer were in the forest instead of a store. "Don't get wrapped in something that's been trapped." Helping Paws invites all of its friends to a bazaar Feb. 23 at the Crystal Point mall. Many pet related gift items will be on sale... quality merchandise only. Volunteer opinion poll takers will be available to help answer some very important questions about the work HP is and is not doing. This is everyone's time to speak out. On Feb. 29, a meeting of concerned citizens will take place at the Lake in the Hills POA building. Reporters, States Attorney Floro, Animal Control officer Jack Rahorst and Dr. Johnson of the Department of Health, as well as local village police officers, have been invited. The purpose of the meeting at 7:30 p.m. is to seek information concerning the pet killer(s) loose in that area and in some way find a method that will work to stop this maniac(s). More related cases are happening daily. The latest is the axing of a small dog and the skinning of a cat. If Xake in the Hills I0HNI FREUND Freund Funeral Home Serving Wonder Lake and Chicagoland Area •15-72S-0233 7611 HANCOCK DR. WONDER LAKE residents and other com munities' residents don't care enough to attend this meeting, then HP will have no choice but to let it con tinue unchecked. HP urges citizens from all areas to attend the meeting to stop these killers. A reward of $100 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person or persons unknown who set a cat on fire in mid December in front of a gas station on, route 62 between Lake in the Hills and Algonquin. All information will be kept strictly confidential. Call 312-639-2881 evenings. The adoption fee includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery if performed by a vet of HP's choice or, a deduction from the original cost of the surgery if per formed by a vet of your choice. The adoption fees remain the same whether the pet has already been altered or not. Adoption fees are collected at the office only, the ex ception to this rule is if a pet is adopted through a foster home. In this case, the fee is collected from the foster parent.
