S:SENIOR CITIZEN S CORNER jf/ HELPFUL IDEAS FOR SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT Estate Planning Developing an estate plan that will distribute your pro perty according to your wishes is a job requiring competent legal assistance. Estate plan ning, then, is not a "do-it yourself" job. The help of an attorney is usually necessary to make sense out of highly technical inheritance and tax laws which may undergo changes every three to five years, depend ing on the state in which you reside. An. attorney, keep in mind, can also help you pre- • pare valid, legal methods to execute your wishes. Normally, a property owner will want his estate managed in such a way that his own security is preserved and so that his heirs receive the pro perty he chooses with a mini mum of tax liability. Husbands and wives should share in the planning of their estate. It is particularly impor tant that wives know the loca tion of all property owned, whom to rely upon for advice and the procedures for set tling an estate. Two general ways of trans ferring property are through wills and lifetime property transfers. No one plan is best for all families. A basic under standing of the options and procedures available, however, will enable you to develop the best plan for your needs with the aid and advice of an attorney.
