PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 27,1880 v Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 6, 1930) At the stated meeting of the City Council, the mayor reminded the aldermen that at the beginning of the fiscal year he had told them that it would be his aim to keep complete decorum through all the meetings and that only one member could have the floor at one time, and that, lately, some of the members in their heated arguments had made more or less of a burlesque show of the board meeting and that from now on he wished them to only speak when per mission was granted them. One of the greatest projects ever undertaken in this locality has been suc cessfully accomplished, giving to the people of Northern Illinois a beautiful body of water called Wonder Lake and second in size only to Fox Lake, in this territory. The large basin is now practically filled with water and Nippersink creek has been transformed into a beautiful lake about three and one-half miles wide, with more than 12 miles of shore line. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 29, 1940) The Lily Lake case made the headlines again. Ap pearing before Judge William L. Pierce, Attorney Paul J. Lietzel, in representing the newly organized village of Lily Lake, asked leave of the court to have certain orders in the case properly authenticated as exhibits in the supreme court where the case now stands. The petition was granted. The case concerned a quo warranto asking that the president "bf the village board, Harry H: Wise, and other village officers show WHAT WOULD YOU LOOK LIKE WITHOUT YOUR GLASSES? Justin Bowers, formerly of Spring Grove and McHenry, was killed in Oklahoma in an automobile accident. The famous tackle oh the University of Oklahoma football team was 22 years old. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of March 5, 1955) James Pearson, 15-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Pearson of Ringwood and a sophomore in the McHenry high school, was informed that he had won a Gold Key and a placing with one of his recent drawings in an annual high school art contest. The winning drawing now hangs in the Wieboldt store in Evanston. The Gold Key was given for exceptional work in the cScholastic Art award regional exhibition. Because of his high rating the drawing will now be sent to the national contest where it will hang in the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg, Pa. Antonson seek^ the aldermanic post left vacant by the decision of Edward J. Thennes not to seek reelection. He is one of three aldermen whose terms expire and who will not again be candidates. The others are Arnold Anderson in Ward 1 and George J. Freund in Ward 3. Seeking Mr. Anderson's post is Edward J. Gausden, while Charles D. Brown has filed in Ward 3. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 4, 1970 The board of School District 15 has appointed Mrs. Harris W. (Delores) Manny of McHenry to fill the 30 days remaining in the term of Rev. John Mclntyre, who resigned recently. A resident of McHenry for three years, she has had 10 years of teaching ex perience. The February meeting of the McHenry County Bar association held in Wood stock heard Magistrate William J. Gleason urge the bar to participate in the planning of the new McHenry county courthouse. He pointed out to the Bar association its special in terest in the design of the court facilities and the jail and said that they should contribute their professional experience and advice to the supervisors and the ar chitect. Vanity Plates Lottery A public lottery was scheduled Feb. 26, to determine the recipients of more than 3,000 personalized (vanity) license plates for Illinois passenger cars and motorcycles. Purpose of the lottery was to resolve duplicate requests for certain names or letter combinations. "Winners in the lottery will be notified by mail within two weeks after the drawing," Dixon said. "Manufacture and delivery of the personalized plates will require approximately 90' days after the formal application and fee are received. "Motorists who have requested a plate that no one else has requested-and there are thousnads-will be notified at the same time as the lottery winners." Dixon said the extra fees charged for these plates support the cost of the program and will boost revenue for the Illinois Road fund. "Motorists who do not want vanity plates will not be required to pay one cent toward the extra cost of this program," he said. Heading the list of the 15 most popular requests for automobiles is VETTE, with more than 100 motorists vying for this set of special plates. Other lettefr combinations with the greatest number of requests are MIKE, DAVID, ROBERT, MARK, JOHN, CAROL, IRISH, DAVE, BILL, MARY, JACK. CHEVY, FRANK and CORVET. Most popular requests from motorcycle owners are for HARLEY and HONDA Personalized plates consist of three, four, five and six letter combinations, and cannot be m violation of good- taste and decency standards. . All three letter plates with no digits which have been previously issued exempt from extra fees so long as they remain with the current owners. Dixon established Dec. 31, 1979, as the initial deadline for personalized Pi**® requests. More than 24,000 requests for passenger plates and more than 300 motorcycles were received. These are the requests that fall under the one-time-only lottery- , , • Personalized plate requests received after Jan. 1, 1980, will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Dixon pointed out that motorists may request a personalized plate at any time. yif it hasn't already been requested and is in good taste, it will be yours," Dixon said. Health Drive To End Only a few days remain before the close of the annual membership campaj&n of the McHenry County Health Improvement Association (HIA). Norman Liedberg, HIA president, said there has been an enthusiastic response from county residents for membership in the HIA and the organization's unique health care benefit plans. "We want to remind everyone that there is still time to join. We do expect to meet or surpass our enrollment goal when the campaign draws to a close on March 1," Liedberg said. "There are now 100 Illinois counties served by HIAs. More than 300,000 people have been able to secure group coverage through these organizations," Liedberg said. "The benefits provided through the HIAs are comparable with the very best health care coverage plans available to any group of people, including large employer sponsored programs." "HIA membership is open to McHenry county residents who are self-employed or work for firms with, fewer than 10 full-time employees. Coverage is available to both individuals and families. The McHenry county HIA also offers a special program for persons age 65 and older who are covered by Medicare. This program does not duplicate Medicare, but supplements it. AFRICAN SWINE FEVER Dr. Paul Doby, superin tendent of the Illinois Department of Agriculture's Division of Meat, Poultry and Livestock Inspection, has asked for stricter federal controls on swine feeding after the discovery of African swine fever in Cuba. It is most often spread by feeding contaminated garbage to swine. The highly contagious disease is also one of the deadliest. Doby said entry of African swine fever into the U.S. would virtually eliminate swine production in major areas, would cost taxpayers millions to eliminate and would drive up the cost of pork for consumers. Illinois and most Midwestern states have already enacted state laws prohibiting garbage feeding to swine, but the practice is still common in many eastern states.
